*TOTAL excludes 44 respondents who did not select a race/ethnic category: 37 who ONLY gave a written comment on the two-part Race/Ethnicity item and 7 who ONLY said "Not a US Citizen."

Note: Numbers in cells are NOT mutually exclusive. For example, of the TOTAL 147 students who checked "Black or African American" on the survey--only about half (n=76, 52%) are represented in ONLY ONE cell and column. The  other half of Black respondents appear in one or more additional racial/ethnic categories (columns). See tables of column and row percents below for further details.

Overall, 90% of all survey respondents selected ONLY ONE racial/ethnic category on the two-part survey item. Similarly, 90% of whites also selected ONLY ONE category, however, smaller proportions of the other racial/ethnic groups selected only one category. Almost one-third of Hispanics (31%) selected ONLY the Hispanic ethnicity category and no additional race category.

The above table shows row percents: the proportion of respondents who selected one category versus two, versus three, etc.-- by each racial/ethnic group.

For example, 87% of the 5,865 respondents who selected ONLY ONE category reported their race as "White" on the survey, 8% of them reported their race as "Asian," etc. (Racial/ethnic proportions are mutually exclusive for this row only.)  Of the 71 respondents who selected THREE racial/ethnic categories, almost all (96%) reported one of their race/ethnicities as "White," 66% reported one of their three race/ethnicities as "Hispanic," and 58% reported one of their race/ethnicities as "American Indian."
