CU-Boulder Campus Climate Survey, Fall 2006

Scale development

The Climate Survey scales used in 2006 are similar to those used in 2001. In 2001, Climate data were examined for the purpose of producing summary scale scores. Items sharing a common theme were combined into a single scale using factor analysis. A total of 9 scales were constructed. Scales ranged from 3 to 12 items, with reliabilities typically in the .8 to .9 range.

Scale scores were computed by first converting all responses to a 0-100 scale (e.g., lowest response option recoded to 0 and the highest recoded to 100), and then averaging together responses to items included in the scale. For example,

Comfort being in class = mean (comfort being in class + comfort interacting with faculty + comfort expressing views in class).

Scale scores range from 0 to 100 and are displayed for each subgroup analysis (e.g., by gender or by ethnicity). They are generally ordered from high to low based on means for the group. When viewing the graphs, clicking on each scale name displays item-level results.

Scale content is summarized in the table below.
