Total population: In spring of 1998, the population included all degree recipients receiving degrees summer 1996 through spring 1997. In 1999, it included all degree recipients from summer 1997 through spring 1998.

Survey population: Population members for whom the CU Alumni Foundation had purportedly current and accurate addresses. This was about 90% of the population in 1998. We did not have this information available for 1999, however. To conserve resources, we used a different method of sampling. Instead of requesting addresses for the whole population of degree recipients and then taking a sample, we requested addresses for only a portion of the total population, and then sampled from this group (which included alumni who had missing address information).

Survey sample: A sample of the total population of degree recipients for whom the Alumni Foundation had a current address on file. Each group of bachelor's and post-bachelor's degree recipients within a survey year was selected so that it contained approximately 800 members. For bachelor's recipients, this was approximately 20% of the "total population", and for post-bachelor's recipients, about 50%.

Reachable sample: Members of the survey sample for whom the questionnaires were not returned as undeliverable (those with probably-good addresses). In 1998, 17% of the bachelor's recipients in the survey sample and 9% of the post-bachelor's recipients were unreachable. In 1999, 14% of bachelor's and 13% of post-bachelor's recipients were unreachable.

Survey respondents: "Reachable" sample members who returned completed questionnaires.
