1999 One-Year-Out Alumni Comments by EDUGOALS rating -- for Bachelors Educational Goals Met? QID Collg Comment on HOW educational goals met by CU-degree program --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-Definitely 0011 AS There are some things I would change but for the most part, it has met my expectations. 0017 AS For what I wanted at the time but in retrospect I was not ready to go to college to prepare for what I wanted to do when I grew up! Now, I am on the right track! I will be getting my teacher credential & MA in special education. 0052 AS Since graduation, I've been 100% focused on my writing as I continue to aspire being a published novelist/author. In that way, I consider myself self- employed. Since I was a creative writing major, I use my degree daily. And as a writer, I find the broad spectrum of courses required as a liberal arts major to be priceless. 0098 AS I am completely satisfied w/my educational (&overall) experience at CU. I am just exploring other options before I settle on a definite career path. 0109 AS I work in the Interior Design field, and did all through college, but my Philosophy degree gives me a solid foundation for any future pursuits. 0119 AS I learned a lot and had some great professors, but the career placement and internship opportunities were absolutely awful. I was turned away twice with the career placement office strictly because my degree was in Anthropology. 0141 AS When I decided to become a history major, it was mainly due to the fact that I was ending my sophomore year and I was still undecided. Though I was interested in history, I never had any concrete plans to become a historian or a teacher. Currently, I'm putzing around as a floral delivery guy, still without any clue as to what I want to do (much to the chagrin of my parents). To make a long story short, most employers are looking for Computer Science, Engineering, or Business majors - not good ole history majors. 0158 AS But it didn't help me find a job nor did career services - guess you have to be a business major for them to care. 0218 AS But I wish I were working in my field. The local shops never even return my calls, or inquiries. 0256 AS My CU-Boulder degree ws my second bachelor's, done for my personal enrichment. 0300 AS I wanted to learn about Psychology and did and got into Nursing School after completing your pre-nursing program. However, I chose to pursue a different career path. 0305 EN I use what I learned in engineering extensively!!! 0328 AS Yes, I was a Biology major and now I'm working in an immunology lab and applying to medical school. 0369 AS I've always had a passion for History and my study of the subject at CU was fabulous. I loved the experience and really enjoyed myself while in the program. Also, it helped me gain writing skills crucial to the study of law. 0385 BU It enable me to obtain a job in the specific field I was interested in. 0405 AS I got into Medical School. 0415 AS I believe I got the most out of C.U. The Psychology Dept. is outstanding, which certainly strengthened my grad. School applications. (I'm in a PH.D program in Social Psychology). I absolutely loved my Psych. Classes, and apply what I learned at CU every day. 2-Somewhat 0025 AS Teaching quality and expectations of teachers & students needs raising. 0053 AS I'm not employed, but after law school I hope to get a job. CU-Boulder was merely a stepping stone. The overall education was Okay, but I wouldn't say that by itself would get me a job. Education goals are met by the individual and it only becomes what one makes it. 0058 AS I should have taken more English classes and public speaking classes. I loved my Biology degree, but now I am in Marketing and give presentations weekly. I never worked on those skills in college, although I do pretty well. 0061 AS The B.A. program in Psychology does not have much relevant clinical or applied information - that would have been very useful to have! 0062 BU I wish my program at CU (Information Systems) was MORE technical. They made me take too many none challenging courses for the degree. 0086 AS I would have preferred to take more biology classes and not so many core classes. 0103 EV It would have been much more valuable to me if CU's architecture program were accredited. 0122 AS MCDB is an excellent program, but needs more general scientific background integrated into degree. For example, MCDB & EPOB need to join forces. I believe this could strengthen one's scientific database while improving and enhancing research opportunities. 0123 JR Want to get a 2nd BA @ Art Center College of Design to further my art career. 0124 AS I believe it would be beneficial to offer more career guidance and services during freshman & sophomore years. Also, have professors teach classes versus teaching assistants & grad. Students. 0129 EN I would have liked more chances to customize my class selectin & take more business-related classes. 0137 AS I would have liked to have obrained sufficient skills to not need Grad. School. 0139 AS I am staying at home by choice w/our baby, but have started looking for part time employment. I hope to start a masters program in the fall. 0143 AS I am unable to get a job in my field & unfortunately still owe thousands for my education. I can't go to graduate school until it is paid off. 0196 BU CU education has helped me to get a job as manager of information systems, but the reason for attending CU was to have a business of my own. I can foresee this taking place in the next two years, that is when my CU education will really help me. 0206 BU Class sizes too big. Needed more of a selection of classes & in my area of emphasis. 0207 EN I would have liked to have more classes that relate to the "real world". 0210 AS I wish I had looked into other programs while studying @ CU. My department (economics) was great, however, I am interested in a variety of other subjects that I would've liked to have gained some experience! 0216 BU My major was Business Management. Now I have a secure job in Business Operations. 0220 BU I worked extremely hard to earn two degrees and attain a GPA of 3.4. However, none of that has helped me in finding a job that I strived for. 0226 AS Many of the classes did not challenge me at all. Only a few teachers really seemed to enjoy teaching and want to offer a solic education. Other classes take me back to high school days. 0231 AS More emphasis on internships, how your degree applies to real life, resume writing for your specific degree, companies in the area who hire from your degree, etc. - needed!! We need ways to communicate w/alumni who have graduated in the same field! 0244 AS The program of study was helpful, but my independent research and work was even more helpful. 0245 AS I think that CU has a very poor placement program. The counselors have virtually no contacts. Career services needs to make significant changes in order to help students. As an alumni of CU, I am very disappointed with the way career services operates. The program caters to business and engineering students providing no assistance for students in Arts and Sciences (the majority of the student body). 0283 AS More info regarding career placement and different career paths would have been useful; perhaps, a mandatory class either sophomore year or even freshman year. I feel that this would help focus students' studies. 0324 AS I think the E.P.O.B. program should've required a concentration in Biology ie. Field Biology, etc... 0329 AS Satisfied parents... 0353 AS I don't like the fact that my coursework only got me a B.A., where as if I would have gone to my state university, I could have earned a B.S. in Biology. 0372 BU Molly is currently serving as a economic development officer with the Peace Corp in Mali West Africa. Rather then forward your survey (mail is very slow), I have completed the survey basec on my correspondence with Molly. If this is unsatisfactory, please disregard this response. Terry Wilbur. 0389 AS Am now attending graduate school in Uppsala, Sweden. 0409 AS I had low expectations. 3-Not-at-all 0112 AS I finished all my classes. However, I did not feel like I got anything useful out of them that I knew how to transfer into the working world. I do feel more educated but only for myself, not work. 0127 AS Even though I sought all assistance available at the career office center - I did not get any help w/employment. Also, my guidance counselors were horrible! You need better liaisons. 0209 AS I feel that I am too qualified for some jobs and under-qualified for the jobs in my degree field. I feel the degree was and may have been worthless. 4-No answer 0390 AS I would like to be gainfully employed in Int. Affairs, but it is difficult to find a job in land-locked Denver that uses my degree. 0391 AS I enjoyed my education and am a smarter & more conscientious citizen because of it regardless of whether or not it is directly related to the volunteer and subbing work I end u doing on a full time permanent basis. This is the 2nd one I've filled out. No more please! [Back to Top] 1999 One-Year-Out Alumni Comments by EDUGOALS rating--for Post-Bachelors Educational Goals Met? QID Collg Comment on HOW educational goals met by CU-degree program ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1-Definitely 0054 GR I found the faculty and curriculum of the Ed. School both to be excellent. The course expectations were rigorous, the material germane to the field, and the faculty exemplary. 0075 BG Without earning my MBA, I would not have been able to switch industries. I am now in product management in software. 0080 GR My master's degree in literacy has helped me tremendously as a first grade teacher. 0082 GR I received an MS in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Management and am currently employed as a construction manager in the Denver area. My degree is 100% the reason for my current employment and I am very satisfied with the education I received. 0269 GR I entered my CU program with the intention of returning to the sciences when I was done, and I did - no surprises. 0291 GR I was a student at Boulder for my master's degree only. I am a teacher and my degree was very helpful in many ways. 0292 GR It's prepared me for future goals which CU has helped lay the groundwork for. 0358 GR My undergrad experience & relationships I made with professors got into grad school which got me into a career. My grad program was excellent. 0377 GR PH.D in music. Currently employed as full time music educator in BVSD. 2-Somewhat 0007 GR How about providing internet service to MacIntosh computer users! 0035 GR The split between the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Departments hindered my program of study. 0041 GR Please make your questions clearer. 0047 GR I was quite pleased with my C.U. education. I am going on for a Ph.D at C.U. However, the courses were "toned down" in response to students whining and complaining about the difficulty (of them). Therefore, some courses excluded material that I preferred to be included. 0048 GR My educational goals were met in that I wanted a Master's Degree in Journalism and I got one. I also had a very positive internship experience. My educational goals were not met in that my coursework was extremely hit and miss as for as the quality of instruction and materials. In addition, my (thesis) professional project advisor bordered on emotional abuse with his lack of guidance and unclear/ changing expectations and guidelines. Overall, when I received academic guidance throughout my program, there was a lack of knowledge/attention/care that led to my having to take additional courses because of previous mis-advisement. 0049 GR OTHER: I also owe 100000 dollars in financial aid and make $900 per month teaching 30 hours per week in two different colleges. I.e.POVERTY. 0051 GR I have been seeking a tenure trade position at a university but have had no success thus far. 0104 GR achieved my intellectual goals of obtaining a master's degree. I was unable to get even an interview for a job which I would utilize my CU degree. 0107 GR Employer needs job applicant with years of work experience. A degreed graduate will have little chance to start a job with only academic background. 0125 GR Didn't think the teaching staff was "top-notch". Seemed as if the "tenure" staff was the worst. Grad students & new profs. Were most helpful. I would not send my kids to grad. School at CU. 0156 GR The graduate classes must include more homework and the professors must interact more closely with the students. The university should try to encourage creative and innovative research done by Ph.D. students, even if the results are not immediately marketable. They could become valuable in the future! 0160 LW The job market in my field is somewhat flooded right now. 0162 GR I graduated with a Ph.D. in electrical Engineering from CU in 1997. My research experience in the OCS center on campus gave me the skills required for my job. However, I felt the class offerings in Engineering were a bit "thin". 0242 BG Practical education was valuable. Academic standard in graduate education needs to be increased. 0276 GR I believe the Telecom program to be great for interdisciplinary (which it is). But is lacking in the more technical, networking type of classes. 0313 GR Classes were mostly not useful in my work (systems architect) but the thesis work gave me several valuable skills. 0335 GR I found the Music School to be very disorganized. Requirements for the degree seemed to be constantly subject to change. When things did change or "interpreted" differently, information was supplied by word of mouth and not through formal means. It was a constant frustration. 0343 LW Law school doesn't really teach you how to be a lawyer. Also, law school needs to address career services issues better. 0352 LW Undergraduate degree: I doubt I would have been able to get a job w/just my undergrad degree, served to get me into law school. My honors theses may have helped me get my job. Law degree: There were a lot of classes that they didn't offer they may have been more useful; In general, classes don't prepare you for bar & professors don't help you get jobs. 0400 GR Not enough intentional focus. 0401 GR I learned, but was very unhappy with the "indentured servant' manner in which faculty treated graduate students. Graduate students should unionize. 3-Not-at-all 0036 GR I was very disappointed w/my graduate degree. The professors in the civil engineering dept. leave much to be desired. But I expressed this on every evaluation form for 4 years and nothing changed - so nothing changed. 0321 GR Not enough help in obtaining employment. 0355 GR The Masters Creative Writing Program is way too large. The instructors were skilled but way overloaded with too many students. I did not receive the rigorous writing training or attention to my work that I would've hoped for. That, I believe, is the fault of the large size of entering classes. PBA:csk --l:\ir\survey\alumni\alm1_all\alm1opns.htm, 3/10/00 |
