National Survey of Student Engagement 2006

Why Students Work for Pay at CU-Boulder

At CU-Boulder, the reason that students report most often for working for pay is to earn money for basic expenses. The percentages of students who reported working for this reason varies across racial/ethnic and gender subgroups. More racial/ethnic minority students (defined in this instance as African-American, Hispanic-American, and Native-American students combined) than white students reported working for pay to earn money for basic expenses. This is particularly evident for freshmen, where 45% of racial/ethnic minorities reported this reason for working, compared with 34% of white students, but is somewhat less evident for seniors (58% racial/ethnic minorities vs. 50% white students). Somewhat more white students than racial/ethnic minorities reported that they do not work for pay at all (42% vs. 32%, respectively, for freshmen and 17% vs. 15% for seniors).

With respect to gender differences, more females than males reported working for pay to earn money for basic expenses, irrespective of class level (42% vs. 30%, respectively for freshmen and 56% vs. 46% for seniors). Somewhat more males than females reported that they do not work for pay at all (42% vs. 37%, respectively, for freshmen and 17% vs. 15% for seniors).
