CCHE Quality Indicator System (QIS)
CU-Boulder Fall 1998 Submission

CU-Boulder local indicator 5: Comprehensive Learning Environment: Offering all students a wide range of academic, cultural, social, and research opportunities in and out of the classroom

Evaluation: CU-Boulder boasts over 100 degree programs that students pursue in almost every conceivable combination, a magnificent campus plus specialized facilities for learning, a cosmopolitan campus community, and almost limitless opportunities for students to get involved in campus life and to participate in programs outside their own discipline. Expansion of these opportunities is one goal of our undergraduate focus area; another is improvement of the ways in which we help students take advantage of these opportunities.
UCB5a Degree programs offered In 1997-98 CU-Boulder offered 59 degree programs at the bachelors level, 47 masters, and 42 doctoral, plus law.
UCB5b Opportunities to seek double degrees and double majors In fall 1997, almost 2,000 undergraduates (10%) were enrolled in two or more majors or degree programs, reflecting every possible combination of interests. Many departments also offer formal minors. New combined bachelors/masters programs (e.g. in biology) offer well-qualified students the opportunity to earn both degrees in five years.
UCB5c Physical facilities for learning CU-Boulder's magnificent campus makes a perfect setting for learning. In addition, we are also home to many specialized facilities for learning, including on-campus housing (some with residential academic programs), general and discipline-specific libraries, the mountain research station in the Indian Peaks, the engineering center and its Integrated Technology and Learning Lab, general computing facilities and specialized labs such a the Bechtel computer-aided design lab, a center for state-of-the-art study of foreign languages, music performance rooms of all shapes and sizes, the University of Colorado museum, Fiske Planetarium, Sommers-Bausch Observatory, and a missions operation center for control of a student-run satellite.
UCB5d Academic and career programs cutting across degrees
  • Residential academic programs give over 800 new students each year an academic neighborhood focussed on a theme such as service learning, American culture, or environmental studies. The most recent program, launched in 1997, focusses on international affairs.
  • FallFEST offers 500 new students the opportunity to take three courses in common with fellow members of a 20-student group which also meets for six non-credit sessions introducting campus resources and programs.
  • Study Abroad offers over 100 programs in 50 countries, with no language prerequisites.
  • Career Services helps students at all class levels in clarifying their career goals, obtaining internships, and getting jobs.
  • Service learning lets students apply what they've learned in the classroom and learn about the real world.
  • Other undergraduate programs crossing disciplines include distributed studies and individually structured majors, honors, undergraduate research programs, ROTC, and the Presidents Leadership Class.
  • Graduate-level students can work in several interdisciplinary research institutes and earn interdisciplinary certificates in fields ranging from biotechnology to telecommunications.
UCB5e Opportunities for student involvement in the campus community
UCB5f Cosmopolitan campus community
  • Each year 1,100 international students from over 80 countries study on the Boulder campus
  • Another 375 foreign scholars teach and do research on campus.
  • The Office of International Education serves foreign students and scholars.
  • Students from all 63 Colorado counties and from every US state also add to the cosmopolitan nature of the campus. American students come to CU-Boulder with a wide variety of international experiences and can gain more through studying abroad in over 100 programs in 50 countries.
