CU-Boulder local indicator 2: Graduate Education: Offering masters, doctoral, and law programs which equip graduates to contribute effectively to their professions and society at an advanced level

Evaluation: CU-Boulder's award-winning and unique graduate programs make us the premier graduate institute in the state of Colorado. This is evidenced both by national recognition and by high student satisfaction. The expansion and improvement of research and graduate education is one of four campus focus areas for the next seven years.
UCB2a Nationally-ranked programs
  • In a 1997 study entitled, "The Rise of American Research Universities: Elites and Challengers in the Postwar Era," CU-Boulder ranked 10th among public research universities, and third among rising research universities in the public sector.
  • CU-Boulder is, by invitation, one of only 33 public members of the American Association of Universities (AAU) and the only one in the Rocky Mountain region.
  • Six CU-Boulder doctoral programs were ranked among the top 15 in the nation in 1995, the most recent ranking by the National Research Council. Two others were in the top 25, and eleven other in the top 50.
  • Ten CU-Boulder graduate programs were cited for excellence by U.S. News & World Report in 1996 and 1997.
  • Success magazine has named CU-Boulder one of the nation's top 25 schools for entrepreneurship education.
  • CU-Boulder's geography department ranks at the top in a national survey measuring teaching and research productivity.
  • In an independent study entitled,"Ranking of Law Schools by Educational Quality," the law school at CU-Boulder ranks 16th among U.S. law schools for overall educational quality.
  • Our interdisciplinary telecommunications program, which enrolls almost 500 graduate-level students, recently won a CCHE programs of excellence award.
UCB2b Degree programs offered in Colorado only at CU-Boulder CU-Boulder has the only public law school in the state, and also offers 15 masters programs and 20 doctoral programs not offered elsewhere in Colorado. These include aerospace engineering, classics, communication disorders and speech science, comparative literature, French, geography, linguistics, Spanish, and PhD programs in anthropology, business administration, English, kinesiology, history, philosophy, and several fields of education.

In a recent survey of students receiving graduate-level degrees in 1996-97, 98% said that their CU-Boulder program of study had met their educational goals.

Recent graduate school surveys of students completing their programs show

  • 80% rate the quality of instruction as good or excellent
  • 85% agree that their thesis advisor was willing to spend time on academic advising
  • 85% say their teaching assistantship experiences were effective for professional development
  • 80% say they would recommend CU-Boulder and their department to a friend starting graduate school
UCB2d Programs for students with special needs
  • Interdisciplinary certificate programs in areas from behavioral genetics to remote sensing allow students to explore areas crossing disciplinary lines while earning a degree in a traditional discipline.
  • Our nationally-known graduate teacher program prepares students for careers in teaching.
  • CATECS, the engineering college's center for advanced training in engineering and computer science, delivers graduate courses directly to students in business and industry via live TV broadcast and videotape.
  • Students wishing to shape graduate education at CU-Boulder can join UGGS, an active student government association for graduate-level students.
  • Financial assistance and incentives for excellence come from traditional financial aid, teaching and research assistantships, travel and dissertation grants, and teaching and research awards.
  • Services for students with disabilities, women, non-native speakers, international students, and students of color are available to graduate-level students as well as undergraduate.
  • Programs for encouraging students of color to seek graduate education include SMART (summer multicultural access in research training), and participation in national name-exchange, networking, and Hispanic admission programs.
  • Special retention efforts for students of color include the minority graduate student directory, graduate students of color network, and many fellowships and traineeships.
