Students are sometimes asked to classify themselves into "official" racial/ethnic categories used by the federal and state governments. All US Census surveys and federal and state reporting on ethnicity and race will soon use new categories for this information. Please indicate, below, the options you would select if asked to classify your race and ethnicity. a. Are you of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity-that is, of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race? (please circle one)
b. What race(s) do you consider yourself? Check all that apply. _____ African American or Black: Having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. _____ American Indian or Alaska Native: Having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and maintaining tribal affiliation or community attachment.
_____ Asian: Having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including, e.g., Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Phillippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam. _____ Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: Having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands. _____ White: Having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. _____ Other: Please describe: _________________________________________________________ c. These categories and definitions were developed by the US government's Office of Management and Budget and are mandatory for all Federal reporting on race and ethnicity.
