Department of Philosophy
Graduate Student Outcomes Assessment
The Department of Philosophy offers very structured programs at both the M.A.
and Ph.D. levels. These programs involve distributional requirements that are
designed to ensure that all students have a solid background in logic, in the
history of philosophy, in the values areas, and in the metaphysics and
epistemology areas. Other features, such as a diagnostic paper, a qualifying
paper, and a prospectus defense, at the Ph.D. level, enable students to acquire
the scholarly tools that will enable them to complete the degree successfully
and in a timely fashion.
In addition, the Department has a mentoring program, in which a member of
faculty is assigned to each entering student, to assist the student in making
the transition from undergraduate study to graduate study, and to supply the
student with advice and support.
Finally, the Department has recently introduced a proseminar program for
entering Ph.D. students, in which those students take one seminar together in
both the Fall and Spring Semesters. One of these seminars is in the values area,
and the other in either epistemology or metaphysics. These two seminars provide
the students with an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with other
students who are just beginning graduate study, as well as a shared intellectual
experience, and a good grounding in two central areas of philosophy.
