Goals for Undergraduates



In AY 1987-88 units developed formal statements of their knowledge and skills goals for undergraduate majors. For example, the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has among its goals

  • knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry--atomic and molecular theory, reactivities and properties of chemical substances, and the states of matter; and

  • the ability to read, evaluate, and interpret information on a numerical, chemical, and general scientific level.

Since 1990-91, goal statements have been included in the University of Colorado at Boulder Catalog.

Most units began outcomes assessment in 1989-90 by focusing on a few of their goals and added assessments of other goals in succeeding years. Occasionally, as a unit gained experience assessing its goals it discovered that a goal statement was inappropriate, and revised it for the next year's assessment process and catalog.
