National Research Council (NRC) Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs
at CU-Boulder

Welcome from Susan Avery, Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School:

The NRC graduate data collection process is well under way at CU-Boulder. We've been working to establish data collection systems that will allow us to meet deadlines and respond accurately to the survey items.

NRC's purpose is to produce ratings and other quantitative information on programs for prospective graduate students and others. NRC assessments have been considered the gold standard for rating U.S. graduate programs, so it is important to present ourselves in the best possible light. We also hope to establish methods for collecting and updating this information in the future. NRC, and/or the AAU data exchange, now plan to collect information more regularly, rather than every 10 years.

This is the third NRC survey to take place since they began in 1985, with some major differences this time. This survey is more involved and uses different methodology than in the past NRC surveys, and therefore will require collaboration by the Graduate School, Institutional Analysis, and the academic units. Institutional Analysis is heading up the technical aspect of the data collection; their staff are working not only to make the process as expedient as possible but to also ensure that we get the data right.

The CU-Boulder NRC steering committee is:

  • Susan Avery, institutional coordinator
  • Lou McClelland, Director of Institutional Analysis (IA), data collection and exchange coordinator
  • Carol Lynch, former VC for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, now faculty associate in Academic Affairs, and member of the national NRC steering committee
  • John Stevenson, Associate VC for Graduate Education and Associate Dean of the Graduate School

We will be using this website and a set of email distribution lists to help us keep everyone informed and involved, so stay tuned. We want to thank you in advance for your work in providing the data needed in a timely manner.
