Alert #1 to faculty who are filling out the NRC Faculty Questionnaire

Sent to nrc_ucb on Sunday 1/21/07 at 11:45 am

To nrc_facq, nrc_all, ASNRCChairs (lou’s; not in nrc_all yet)
Subject : NRC faculty questionnaire coming

The National Research Council (NRC) study of the research doctorate generates the most highly regarded and widely cited national rankings of graduate programs. NRC is collecting data right now to update its 1995 ratings. Every AAU school is participating.

You are one of 907 CU-Boulder faculty in 33 programs who will be contacted by NRC in the next 3-4 weeks. You’ll get a US mail and/or e-mail invitation to respond to a web questionnaire. Relevant entries from your FRPA, PeopleSoft, and Graduate School records will already be loaded into the questionnaire you see.

It’s important that you respond to the NRC questionnaire to insure that NRC properly credits all your scholarly activity. While UCB is providing NRC with data to “pre-populate” much of the faculty questionnaire, NRC will not use the data about you unless you personally respond.

The invitation will probably come Feb 5-15 (we’ll let you know the date when we learn it). Deadlines: April 1 final; Feb 18 if you want to be eligible to receive a second NRC survey where you’d rate a sample of 15-20 programs in your field nationwide.

To be ready:

  • 1: Have an electronic version of your CV ready to upload – in Word, RTF, or PDF. * (No, NRC will not let us upload your CV for you.)
  • 2: Attend to e-mails in coming weeks from NRC at UCB.
  • 3: Make sure your e-mail setup will not treat emails sent from the address below as junk.* We have already done this at campus level. The address: nrc-assessment@bhew.nas.edu

We will contact you in the coming weeks with more info about the faculty questionnaire – what’s important, what will be filled-in already from what sources, navigating the web questionnaire, and so on.

Thanks

UCB NRC Steering Committee
Susan Avery – VC Research / Dean of the Graduate School
John Stevenson – Assoc Dean, the Graduate School
Lou McClelland – Director of Institution Research in PBA, Planning/Budget/Analysis
Carol Lynch – Former dean, faculty fellow, and national steering committee member

NRC at UCB website: http://www.colorado.edu/pba/nrc/ -- See for details of faculty lists, schedule, more.

Who got this ememo:

  • 907 faculty listed as New or Core on the faculty lists submitted to NRC.
  • NRC contacts for all 33 participating CU-Boulder programs, A&S, and Engineering
  • Chairs of A&S departments with participating programs

* We have asked ITS to tell us how you can get help with putting your CV in Word, RTF, or PDF, and with checking your e-mail setup. We’ll pass along what we learn. For converting LaTex CV’s to RTF (rich text format) see http://www.tug.org/utilities/texconv/
