NRC Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs

Placements/outcomes of degree recipients summer 2001 through spring 2006
     - these instructions are the same as those in the Excel

What you should do

  • Read this intro tab including "why this is important" below
  • .
  • Use the empty columns on the List tab to record current positions, employers, and locations for your degree recipients.
  • Return the Excel by email by 1/29 to NRC_UCB@colorado.edu
  • OR, decide to do nothing. See below for what will happen.

Why this is important

  • NRC will use "placements" in rating programs.
    • The only place NRC is getting placements is on the faculty questionnaire.
    • NRC will also publish summary info about placements, for each program.
  • Many UCB departments have centralized lists/info on current positions of their graduates.
  • Recording current-employment info here and returning the Excel will
    • Save your faculty time
    • Result in a more complete info on placements than you'd get from relying on individual faculty members to complete this info in the faculty questionnaire.

What's on the List tab

  • Rows on the List tab are
    • Students receiving PhD's in your program summer '01 through summer '06
    • Students in NRSC and COGS are listed with NRSC/COGS and the home program.
      • PBA will put together any competing info received.
  • Columns on the List tab show
    • Student name and current SIS ID (at far right), plus year degree was granted
    • Name of the faculty member on whose faculty questionnaire the student will be listed.
      • Students whose chairs are gone or not receiving faculty questionnaires will be listed with the instructor of record of a dissertation section. If we could not find a dissertation-section instructor who was getting the faculty questionnaire, we selected a committee member.
      • The column "faculty status" shows the faculty member's relationship to this student.
    • Slots for current position, employer, city, state, and country
      • These are filled in for the 150 cases (of 1250) where the alumni association had the info on file as of 1-10-2007. However, the alum assoc info MAY BE OBSOLETE.
    • Feel free to OVERWRITE anything that's there already.
    • There are no control values or set formats, except use 2-character postal codes for states.

What happens then

  • On the faculty questionnaire (Q)
    • What you list will be "pre-populated" by NRC on faculty questionnaires in item F1, with student name and degree year.
    • Faculty may delete, change, or let stand anything that's pre-populated.
    • Faculty can fill in any slot that is not pre-populated. If you don't return the Excel, your faculty will see all empty slots, which they can fill in as they desire.
    • If an individual does not respond to the faculty Q. at all, NRC will NOT use any pre-populated data for that person.
    • FYI, about the faculty Q: http://www.colorado.edu/pba/nrc/aboutfacq.htm
  • Later -- In what NRC publishes about programs for prospective students and others
    • NRC will summarize the answers to F1 to characterize placements by programs. We don't know how they'll summarize, but it's possible they'll count only "academic" placements.
