Changes in Course-Section Enrollments
Changes in Course-Section Enrollments: Fall 88, Fall 93 and Fall 98
Overview
Undergraduate course-section enrollments for fall semesters in 1988, 1993, and 1998 were
analyzed to determine if shifts in enrollment patterns by day and time have occurred over
the past 10 years. The data were reviewed to determine whether there has been:
- a decrease in Monday morning enrollments
- a decrease in Friday enrollments (either AM or PM)
- a decrease in MWF enrollments and an increase in TTH enrollments
- an increase in enrollments in courses offered once per week
Course-section enrollments were analyzed overall, by college, and by course level (lower and
upper division). Numbers displayed are percents of enrollments in each category (e.g., percent
of all fall enrollments in Monday AM classes).
Note: Data are student*course combinations. For example, a student taking three courses, with one
lab, would be counted four times in the total.
Summary
- Generally, the proportion of enrollments on Monday morning and Friday morning are down; Friday afternoon enrollments are down somewhat.
- The biggest changes have occurred in lower division courses and in Business courses
- There has been an increase in Once per Week course-section enrollments, particularly in Business (in part because of the introduction of a one-credit required Business course)
Displays
Percent of enrollments for all course sections (Display A)
- Monday and Friday morning enrollments are down
- MWF and TTH enrollments are down; once per week enrollments are up.
- AM enrollments are down, PM enrollments are up
Percent enrollments for all courses by upper/lower division (Display B)
- Biggest changes in enrollments have occurred for lower division courses, including a fairly large decrease in MWF enrollments
Percent enrollments for A&S and Business, by course level (Display C)
- A&S Monday and Friday morning course-section enrollments have decreased for both course levels; A&S MWF and TTH lower division enrollments have decreased.
- A&S once per week course-section enrollments are up for both course levels
- Business shows dramatic decreases in Monday AM and Friday course-section enrollments (except upper division Friday afternoon); there has also been a large decrease in lower division MWF enrollments.
- Business once per week enrollments are up substantially at the lower level, but down substantially for upper division courses (Note: some of this change reflects the one credit required course introduced by business.)
Percent and total number of enrollments for Engineering and Other Colleges, by course level (Display D)
- Course enrollment patterns have not changed dramatically for engineering courses
- Monday AM course-section enrollments are down for other colleges, as are Friday PM upper division enrollments
- TTH and PM enrollments are up for other colleges
