April 8, 1998 Contact Greg Carey, AAP co-chair, 492-1658, gregory.carey@colorado.edu Each spring the Boulder Faculty Assembly (BFA) gives faculty and instructors the opportunity to rate the performance of and satisfaction with academic administrators through the Administrator Appraisal Program (AAP).
In 1998 faculty rate the performance of 11 campus-wide administrators, one university-wide administrator, and 33 college administrators on four items: scholarly credibility, effectiveness of leadership, respect for faculty views, and overall administrative performance. The items were identical to those used in 1997.
Of the eligible raters, 35.5% (429 of 1,209) returned forms, about the same as the 36.3% for 1997 raters who were not in a special response rate experiment. (There was no experiment this year.) The 429 raters rated an average of 8 administrators each and wrote 509 comments, down from 659 comments in 1997.
There is enormous variance in ratings across administrators: The percentage of A ratings ranges from zero to 88%; percentage of F, from zero to 67%. Average ratings range from A to F.
Ratings of overall administrative performance averaged B- (2.68 on a 0-4 grade scale), slightly higher than last year's 2.51, with increases of .25 or more for one administrator rated both years, minimal change for 29, and decreases of at least .25 for three.
The accompanying table shows response rates, number of responses, percentage distributions, averages, and "letter grades" on all of the administrators rated in this cycle by five or more raters, plus number of responses, average rating, and letter grade from 1997. The results shown are based on responses to the question on "overall administrative performance." The scale is "very good" (A) to "very poor" (F). This question is highly correlated with the other three items and represents a fair summary of the results.
Response rates for individual administrators range from 5% to 61%. Thus, the results do not summarize the opinions of all faculty, but of those who are sufficiently interested, knowledgeable, and committed to speak up.
Raters gave the following ratings averaged across all administrators evaluated
Transcribed copies of all comments have been provided to individual administrators only. Many of the comments are extremely positive, many negative, with considerable disagreement among raters. They provide information not only on opinions about specific administrators, but on what faculty members do and do not value.
This report, plus some additional results, prior year reports, and AAP policies are posted at http://www.colorado.edu/pba/aap under "Results" then "1998."
