Emissions and Registration
Drivers of university vehicles must ensure that the current emissions validation, the current registration, and the vehicle packet (with proof of insurance, accident instructions, and accident report form) are located in each university vehicle that they drive. Citations received because of expired registrations or emissions are the responsibility of the driver.
The emissions procedure
University of Colorado vehicles that are located in the designated Air Care Colorado program areas must have an emissions test and obtain a “Vehicle Inspection Report”. This report should be turned into Transportation Services so that we can ensure you receive an updated registration.
Most vehicles need to have their emissions tested in November. Some vehicles need to get tested every year, while others only need testing every other year (or less often). If your vehicle falls into the November testing cycle, Transportation Services contacts vehicle coordinators to remind them. If your vehicle does not fall into the November testing cycle, the vehicle coordinator will receive a notice on the monthly Preventative Maintenance statement.
CU-Boulder regular gas vehicles get tested at Air Care Colorado on 5655 Airport Road in Boulder. Transportation Services has a payment voucher set up with them; it is not necessary for you to pay for an emissions test. Diesel vehicles get tested at Al’s Front Range Diesel Emissions on 1115 Bowen Circle in Longmont. Call 303-776-6469 to make an appointment with them.
The Air Care Colorado hotline can be reached at 303-456-7090, and their web site is www.aircarecolorado.com.
Registration renewal
Most fleet registrations expire at the end of January. Transportation Services contacts university department vehicle coordinators to arrange for registration pick up. Please keep in mind that emissions’ compliance is required to get an updated registration.
