First-year
and first-year transfer students
versus upper-division transfer
students:
For the purposes of advising
during orientation, you are considered
a first-year student if you graduated
high school within the past year,
even if you are transferring
credits into CU-Boulder. |
Important
notes:
- First-year and first-year
transfer orientation
is a 2-day program in July
and a 3-day program in August.
- Upper-division transfer orientation
is a 1-day program in July
or August.
- Please do not make
travel arrangements until
you have confirmed your orientation
date.
- In July, housing check-in
begins at 7:00 a.m. on the
1st day. Orientation check-in
begins at 7:15 a.m. and your
first required meeting is at
8:00.
- First-year programming
can go as late as 5:00 p.m.
on the 2nd day, so please plan
to be available for the entire
program.
- August orientations are
for out-of-state students who
cannot attend a July program.
The check-in times for August
will be sent in your confirmation
packet.
- For July sessions you
can arrange for early
arrival/late departure.
- For more information about
where to stay, check out the Travel Planning
page.

As an incoming student, you are about to
embark on an exciting new phase in your
life. The Orientation,
Advising, and Registration Program is designed
to help get you on your way by familiarizing you with
the Boulder campus, providing you with academic advising,
and explaining how to register for classes. We hope
you leave your summer orientation feeling confident
and excited about moving to Boulder and starting school
in August.
Orientation is required for all students new to CU-Boulder.
Note: PDFs of the handbook and orientation itineraries will be available for download later this spring.
First-Year Students
You must stay overnight in the residence halls
during the July program, whether or not you
will be living on campus in the fall. For students
who will be living on campus in the fall, there
is no cost for orientation accommodations or
meals. For students living off campus in the
fall, orientation accommodations and meals
will be charged to your fall bill. A portion
of the matriculation fee, paid by all undergraduate
students entering the university, pays for
the orientation program.
Upper-division Transfers
If you prefer to stay on campus during orientation,
optional overnight accommodations are available
in July but not August.
All Students
- First-year Colorado resident students should attend
a two-day July orientation session: July 7 –8 or July 10–11, pending
availability.
- First-year students from out
of state are strongly encouraged to attend
one of the July programs, which are more
personalized than the large, three-day August
session (August 19–21).
- Colorado resident upper-division transfer students
are required to attend the July 24
orientation session. Out-of-state students
may attend transfer orientation on July 24 or
on August 18. If you confirm your intent to attend an orientation session at least one week in advance, we will schedule an appointment during orientation for you to meet with an academic advisor (upper-division transfer orientation students only).
- Space at each
orientation session is available on a first-come,
first-served basis.
- All students have an
equal chance of getting courses, no matter
which orientation session you attend because
you will register for classes from home in late July, not during orientation.
First-years are preregistered for courses
and will have an opportunity to change their
schedule in late July. More information will be mailed to you in early summer.
- First-year students
should plan to remain on the Boulder campus
until 5:00 P.M. on the second day of the program.
Please arrange your travel plans accordingly.
