Journey Leaders

Do you love CU Boulder and want to pass that pride on to others? New Student and Family Programs is currently looking for students to serve as a part of the 2017 Journey Leader (JL) team! Journey Leaders serve the University of Colorado, Boulder by helping to welcome and transition more than 7,000 new students and their family members to the university while interacting with first-year students, transfer students, families, non-traditional students, university faculty and administrators, and the other Journey Leaders.

They serve as peer advisors and resources, as well as role models, for program participants. These programs include: Fall Welcome, Family Weekend, Spring Welcome, and New Student Welcome Days. Journey Leaders must be flexible and always ready and willing to make decisions, accept new tasks, or take on additional responsibilities. Being a Journey Leader requires a total “team” effort!

Apply to be a Journey Leader!

  • Serve as a role model for new students by displaying the responsibility and maturity of an upper class student. This includes adherence to all university guidelines and policies.

  • Staff and represent CU Boulder during all programming as outlined in the 2017 Journey Leader contract.

  • Attend and participate in the weekly Journey Leader team meetings in the spring 2017 semester, Journey Leader retreat (Aug. 11-13), and intensive training (Aug. 14-20).

  • Lead small group sessions for first-year and transfer students.

  • Assist in the organization and preparation of the orientation program, Fall Welcome, Spring Welcome and Family Weekend.

  • Familiarize new students with campus services and activities.

  • Serve as a resource when new students have a concern or problem. Be knowledgeable of campus services to provide referrals for new students and their families.

  • Participate in the creation and production of various orientation performances, presentations and evening activities.

  • Display initiative in assisting incoming students and families/guests with special needs and concerns.

  • Assist with new students’ transition into CU Boulder.

  • May be asked to work odd hours including early mornings and late nights.

  • Support and help prepare for all New Student and Family Programs initiatives and events (including Family Weekend, Journey Leader Recruitment, etc).

  • Be committed to carrying out the mission and vision of New Student and Family Programs.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to CU Boulder and a willingness to serve others.

  • Exhibit qualities of a student leader: reliable; responsible; confident; flexible; appreciation for diversity and diverse points of view; positive attitude; strong work ethic; teamwork; strong communication and interpersonal skills; problem solver; takes initiative and able to manage conflict.

  • Maintain a 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA, be in good academic standing with CU Boulder and uphold the university standards of conduct.

  • Must be enrolled in classes during the spring 2017 semester and intend to enroll for fall 2017 semester.

Journey Leaders are permitted to enroll in summer classes, participate in summer internships/study abroad programs and are not required to work on-campus throughout the summer. Journey Leaders may have the opportunity to work in New Student and Family Programs over the course of the summer.

The position begins in March 2017 and Journey Leaders are expected to serve through December 2017.

  • First Team Meeting: Friday, Feb. 24

  • Participate one of the weekly Journey Leader team meetings starting the week of March 6 (JLs will choose one session to attend each week prior to the beginning of the spring semester)**

    • Tuesdays: 4:30-6 p.m.

    • Wednesdays: 4-5:30 p.m.

    • Thursdays: 4:30-6 p.m.

**Dates and times are subject to change based on team size, classroom availability and team availability.**

Possible summer employment in New Student & Family Programs.

  • Attend the Journey Leader retreat the weekend of Aug. 11-13.

  • Participate in Journey Leader training from Aug. 14-20.

  • Serve as a Journey Leader during the orientation program Aug. 20-27 and Fall Welcome Aug. 28-Sept. 1. Participation includes International Student Orientation, Graduate Student Orientation, move-in, small group meetings, information tables and other events to be determined.

  • Assist with 2017 Family Weekend (Date TBD).

  • Support the 2018 Journey Leader recruitment efforts.

Currently, the Journey Leader program is a volunteer, leadership development and mentorship program. Students selected to serve will begin training in March 2017 and return to campus in the fall for a retreat and intensive training program (Aug. 11-20) as well as assist with programming throughout orientation/move-in (Aug. 20-27), Fall Welcome (Aug. 28-Sept. 1) and Family Weekend (Dates TBD).

Journey Leaders interested in summer employment will have the option to join our staff during the summer to assist New Student and Family Programs with outreach to all of our new students and families as well as assist in the implementation of New Student Welcome Days. These positions would be paid hourly at a rate of $9.50.

  • Submit the online application form including the short answer questions by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22. The application form can be found here

  • Have your reference submit the faculty/staff recommendation form online by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The recommendation form will be automatically submitted to your reference following the successful submission of your application.

  • After applications receive preliminary review, candidates will be contacted about scheduling a group interview. Group interviews will take place the week of Feb. 6-10.

  • Following group interviews, candidates will be notified about whether or not they will be advancing to the individual interviews. Second round interviews will take place Feb. 15-17 and Feb. 20-21.

  • Final selection decisions will be sent out no later than Wednesday, Feb. 22. All candidates selected for the Journey Leader position will be invited to the Journey Leader Celebration and First Team Meeting on Friday, Feb. 24.
