First-year and first-year transfer students versus upper-division transfer students:

For the purposes of advising during orientation, you are considered a first-year student if you graduated high school within the past year, even if you are transferring credits into CU-Boulder.

Important notes:

  • First-year and first-year transfer orientation is a 2-day program in June/July and a 3-day program in August.
  • Upper-division transfer orientation is offered in July or August.
  • Please do not make travel arrangements until you have confirmed your orientation date.
  • In June/July, housing check-in begins at 7:00 a.m. on the 1st day. Orientation check-in begins at 7:15 a.m. and your first required meeting is at 8:00.
  • First-year registration can go as late as 5:00 on the 2nd day, so please plan to be available for the entire program.
  • August orientations are for out-of-state students who cannot attend a June/July program. The check-in times for August will be sent in your confirmation packet.
  • In June/July sessions you can arrange for early arrival/late departure.
  • For more information about where to stay, check out the Travel Planning page.

As an incoming student, you are about to embark on an exciting new phase in your life. The Orientation, Advising, and Registration Program is designed to familiarize you with campus, provide you with academic advising, and enable you to register for classes. We hope you complete orientation feeling confident about starting school in August.

You MUST attend an orientation program in order to register for classes.
First-year and first-year transfer students must also stay overnight in the residence halls during the program, whether or not they will be living on campus in the fall. Upper-division transfer students have the option of staying in the residence halls during the transfer orientation program.

NOTE: Students have an equal chance of getting courses at each session, because seats are reserved for each session in June, July, and August.

  • First-year Colorado resident students are required to attend a two-day June or July session.
  • Out-of-state students are strongly encouraged to attend one of the June or July programs, which are more personalized than the larger August sessions.
  • Upper-division transfer students are required to attend a July or August session in order to be eligible to register for classes. Program details will be sent in your confirmation packet.
  • Space at each session is determined by major and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
