Gmail - Configure iOS 7 (iPhone, iPad, iPod)

This tutorial demonstrates how to configure an iOS device for CU-Boulder's Gmail.

Sending email successfully

To be able to send email succesfully, be sure to follow the instructions until the very end.

Screenshots are from an iPad. Steps apply to all three devices. 

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):
  • IOS

You may need to enable IMAP for your account prior to configuration of your email client ( To do this: 

  1. From the Gmail web client, click Settings from the cog menu.
  2. In the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, click Enable IMAP.
  3. Click Save Changes.

Tap Settings

Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Then tap Add Account

Tap Google

Step 4

Enter the following account information:

  • Name: Your first and last name.
  • Email: (do not enter
  • Password: Your IdentiKey password
  • Description: however you want to identify your CU-Boulder Gmail account.

Tap Next

Step 5

If you entered your account information properly, you'll see that your account was verified. Now you can turn Mail, Contacts Calendars, and Notes on or off (when selected the color will be green). 

Your configuration is not done yet. Follow the next steps to ensure that you can send email through this account.

Back in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu in Settings, tap on the Gmail account you just created.

In the Outgoing Mail Server, you need to make sure that is entered. Your account settings may say No Server, or it may say

To change this, first tap on SMTP. Next, look through the list of SMTP Servers and if you see, make sure that it is the only SMTP server that is turned On. If this is complete, skip to step 12.

If you do not see in the list, tap Add Server

Step 10

Enter the following information in the Add Server fields:

  • Host Name:
  • Username: CU Login Name
  • Password: Your Identikey password

Tap Save

Step 11

Make sure that is set to On (when selected the color will be green), then tap Done

Back in the list of SMTP Servers, you should see Make sure that it is the only SMTP server that is turned On


Step 12

Your account should now be configured properly and you should see your account listed in your Mail app.
