You may need to enable IMAP for your account prior to configuration of your email client (gmail.colorado.edu). To do this:
Open your iOS Settings app and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Enter the following account information:
If you entered your account information properly, you will see that your account was verified. You will see that your account was added and you can turn Mail, Calendars, and Notes on or off.
Back at the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu in Settings, tap on the account you just created.
In the Outgoing Mail Server, you need to make sure that smtp.colorado.edu is entered. Your account settings may say No Server, or it may say smtp.gmail.com. The next step will show you how to turn on smtp.colorado.edu so that you can send messages.
Tap on SMTP. First, look through the list of SMTP Servers and if you see smtp.colorado.edu, make sure that it is the only SMTP server that is turned On. If this is complete, you can skip to step 16.
If you do not see smtp.colorado.edu in the list, tap Add Server…
Enter the following information in the Add Server fields:
Make sure that smtp.colorado.edu is set to On and tap Done.
Back at the list of SMTP Servers, you see smtp.colorado.edu. Make sure that it is the only SMTP server that is turned on.
Your account should now be configured properly and you should see your account listed in your Mail app.
