Overview

The following documentation shows the process of creating a category within your Desire2Learn grade book. This is recommended for organizing different types of items, such as quizzes, discussions, or assignments.

*Note: Items may be added to a category during their initial creation, if the category has been created beforehand. This is done by choosing the category from the Category drop-down menu found while creating an item.

This tutorial is operating system independent.

Step 1

Log into your course and from the Assessments drop-down menu click on Grades.

Click on New drop-down menu and select Catagory.

Enter a name for your category in the Name: field. You may also choose to enter a Short Name that will be displayed in the grade book header, if you so choose.

Choose if you would like to add any sort of grading options for your category.

*Note: The image to the left shows grading options for a Points grading system.

If you so choose, you can also check the boxes related to display options. The options are:

  • Display class average to users
  • Display grade distribution to users

Step 6

Click the Restriction tab and then choose whether you would like to have your category visible for only a certain timeframe, and also choose whether you would like to attach release conditions.

Click Save.

Return to the Grades section and your category will appear.

To move items into the category, check the boxes next to the grade item names and then click the double pencil Edit icon.

Select the category you would like to put them in from the Category drop-down menu associated with your item and then click Save.

Your items will now appear within your category section.
