D2L - Create a Discussion Forum & Topic

Overview

The following documentation will demonstrate the process of creating a discussion forum and topic for a course in Desire2Learn.

This tutorial is operating system independent.

Step 1

Log into your course and from the Communication drop-down menu, click on Discussions.

Step 2

From the New drop-down menu, select New Forum.

Step 3

Under the New Forum Details section:

  • Enter a Title
  • Enter a Description
  • Choose if you would like to Allow anonymous messages
  • Choose if you would like to Messages must be approved before being displayed

Step 4

Choose if you would like to have the forum to be available during a certain time period or locked during a certain time period

Step 5

Click Save and Add Topic.

Step 6

Under the New Topic Details section:

  • Enter a Title
  • Enter a Description
  • Choose if you would like to Allow anonymous messages
  • Choose if you would like to Messages must be approved before being displayed
  • Choose if you would like to force students to start a thread before they can read and reply to other threads in each topic.
  • Under Ratings, select what type of rating system you would like
    • Five Star Rating Scheme allows the class to give posts a rating from one to five stars
    • Up Vote/Down Vote Rating Scheme allows the class to vote posts up and down, giving each post a cumulative score
    • Up Vote Only Rating Scheme allows the class to only vote posts up as a way to show agreement or approval

Step 7

Under the Restrictions tab choose if you would like to attach Release Conditions.

Step 8

Under the Assessment tab, you can choose to activate grading for this Topic. To learn more, visit the Grade a Discussion tutorial.

Step 9

When finished setting your discussion settings click Save and Close.
