D2L - Blindly Grade Student Quiz Responses

The instructions below will help you to blindly grade one essay question at a time, across multiple students in the course. It also outlines how to hide students’ names to help encourage objectivity when grading.

This tutorial is operating system independent.

Step 1

Part I

From Quizzes within your course click the ruler and checkmark icon in the drop-down menu to the right of the Quiz you want to grade.

Step 2

Click the Questions tab.

Step 3

Ensure that Grade Individual Responses is selected.

Step 4

Tick the Blind Marking box. This will hide each student’s name.

Step 5

Select the question you would like to grade by clicking on the question title.

Step 6

One student’s response to the question you selected will appear.

Step 7

Part II

You have 2 options for viewing student responses:

Option 1 – Viewing one student response per page

The default is to show one student response at a time. To navigate from one student to another, use the arrows or numbers at the top of the page.

Step 8

Option 2 – Viewing 20 student responses per page

The maximum number of responses you can view per page is 20. To increase the number of responses to 20, select 20 from the drop down menu at the top of the page.

To navigate to the next page of 20 responses, use the arrows or numbers at the top of the page.

Step 9

Part III

To enter grades for each student:

  1. Locate the Score field at the bottom of their response.  
  2. Type their grade in the score field.
  3. Click the Save button.

Step 10

To enter feedback:

  1. Click the Expand question feedback link at the bottom of the student’s response.
  2. Click in the Feedback textbox and begin typing your feedback.
  3. Click the Save button.

Step 11

Part IV

Once you finished grading and giving feedback for a particular question and are ready to move on to the next question:

  1. Click Go Back to Questions.
  2. Repeat the steps above starting from Step 3 in Part I.
