Overview

Esri provides GIS (Geographic Information System) software for both the desktop computer and for online use, as well as free instructional courses in topics about using their software and about GIS in general. Working with GIS is useful across a wide range of disciplines, not just for viewing maps but for transforming, analyzing, manipulating, and modeling geographic data.

Features

ArcGIS Desktop

  • ArcGIS Desktop is available for Windows
  • For faculty and university-owned computers only
  • License includes ArcInfo, 3D Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and a dozen other modules
  • Esri Data files, including 2010 Census and other socioeconomic and demographic data
  • Instructors of GIS-related courses or programs may request free student licenses

ArcGIS Online

  • An online collaborative web GIS that allows users to view, create and share maps, apps, layers, analytics, and data
  • Requests for individual and class accounts should be sent to sitelic@colorado.edu

Esri Virtual Campus courses

  • Free online Esri Virtual Campus courses are available to students and faculty
  • Choose specific courses and send requests to sitelic@colorado.edu (details below)

Cost

The site license for Esri ArcGIS software is provided as a common good to CU-Boulder, and no direct fees are involved for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Who can get it

  • Licenses for ArcGIS Desktop are available to faculty and staff at CU-Boulder on university-owned computers,  and for use in education and research only on personal computers.
  • ArcGIS Online membership is open to students and faculty; send requests to sitelic@colorado.edu
  • Esri Virtual Campus courses are available to students as well as to faculty and staff.

How to get it

ArcGIS Desktop

Download the ArcGIS Desktop installer and the provisioning/license file. (Faculty & Staff only; CU-Boulder username and IdentiKey password are required.)

  • If your computer has any pre-10.1 ArcGIS products installed, also download the Uninstall Utility, and run it before installing ArcGIS Desktop.
  • Administrators of labs and servers can request ArcGIS for Server and/or License Managers; send requests to sitelic@colorado.edu

ESRI Virtual Campus Courses

  1. See the list of available courses on the Esri Virtual Courses site.
  2. Send request for specific courses (and number of users) to sitelic@colorado.edu.
  3. Access codes and instructions will be sent to you by email.
