D2L - Calculating and Releasing Final Grades

Last Updated: 04/02/2015

Overview

Final grades in your D2L courses are not visible to students by default. The following
documentation shows how to release these final grades so your students can see them. You
should ensure these grades are accurate. Final grades might be inaccurate if:

  • You did not select the Automatically keep final grades updated option when you set up your grade book.
  • There are grade items that you still need to enter grades for.

Before you begin

Verify that the calculation options for your gradebook are set up correctly.

  1. Click on Assessments in the Nav Bar and then choose Grades from the drop-down menu.
  2. Click Settings in the upper right corner of the page.
  3. Click on the Calculation Options tab.
  4. Under the Final Grade Released heading, choose Calculated Final Grade if you wish to release final grades as is to students, or choose Adjusted Final Grade if you wish to change students’ final grades from what D2L has calculated.
  5. Under the Grade Calculations heading, verify you have chosen the Ungraded Items setting which best suites your needs. See the “Calculation Options” section below for more information.
  6. Finally, we recommend you check the Automatically keep final grades updated box.

Calculation Options: Drop ungraded items vs. Treat ungraded items as 0

Within the Grade Calculations section of the Calculation Options screen instructors have two options on how to handle ungraded items:

  • Drop ungraded items: Excludes ungraded items from the calculation of grades. For example, this option will drop any assignment yet to be assigned, but is in the gradebook for future use in a term. This option will keep student grades more accurate throughout a semester.
  • Treat ungraded items as 0: Assigns a value of 0 as the points received for all ungraded item. This option is useful at the end of a semester if you would like all uncompleted student assignments that were ungraded for any reason as 0s.

*Note: The Drop ungraded items option is especially useful when the Automatically keep final grades updated option is checked, because it won't take into account grade items yet to be assigned/completed.

Releasing Final Calculated Grades

Follow these steps if you have selected Calculated Final Grade for your Final Grade Released option.

On the Enter Grades page, click the dropdown arrow next to Final Calculated Grade and choose Grade All.

If you did NOT check the Automatically keep final grades updated box in your Gradebook settings, you should recalculate the final grades at this time. Click the dropdown arrow next to Final Grades and choose Recalculate All. Follow the prompts in the window that opens. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

You should first check that the final grades shown in the Final Calculated Grade column are accurate. Note that there may be multiple pages of students to view. Then, to make these grades visible to students, click the drop-down arrow next to Final Grades and choose Release All. After you click Yes to the confirmation prompt, your students can see their final grades.

Additional information: The grades in the Final Calculated Grade column are visible to all students for whom the Release Final Calculated Grade box is checked. If needed, you can check or uncheck this box to release final grades for some students but not others. To quickly change this setting for multiple students at once, select the students using the checkboxes on the left side of the list (the check box at the very top left will select all students on that page), and then click the Release/Unrelease button.

Release Final Adjusted Grades

Follow these steps if you have selected Adjusted Final Grade for your Final Grade Released option

On the Enter Grades page, click the dropdown arrow next to Final Adjusted Grade and choose Grade All.

If you did NOT check the Automatically keep final grades updated box in your Gradebook settings, you should recalculate the final grades at this time. Click the dropdown arrow next to Final Grades and choose Recalculate All.Follow the prompts in the window that opens. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

The Final Adjusted Grade column contains the grades which will be released to students. To begin, populate this column with the grades D2L has automatically calculated for each student by clicking the dropdown arrow next to Final Grades and choosing Transfer All.Click Yes to the confirmation prompt.

Now that the Final Adjusted Grade column has been populated, you can adjust these grades as desired. For example, if the student’s grade is an 89, but you’d like to bump them up to a 90, simply enter “90” / “100” into the Final Adjusted Grade column.

Once you’ve verified that all the grades in the Final Adjusted Grade column are correct (note that there may be multiple pages of students to view), you can make these grades visible to students. To do so, click the dropdown arrow next to Final Grades and choose Release All. After you click Yes to the confirmation prompt, your students can see their final grades.

Additional information:
The grades in the Final Adjusted Grade column are visible to all students for whom the Release Final Adjusted Grade box is checked. If needed, you can check or uncheck this box to release final grades for some students but not others. To quickly change this setting for multiple students at once, select the students using the checkboxes on the left side of the list (the check box at the very top left will select all students on that page), and then click the Release/Unrelease button.
