D2L - Working With Bonus Items
Desire2Learn allows for instructors to create extra credit assignments within the learning environment in the form of bonus items. A bonus item is a separate grade item which students can elect to complete. Points earned on a bonus item can only improve a student's grade. Although the process is very similar to creating a regular grade item, there are some things that need to be done differently in order to create a bonus assignment. Review the information below to learn about creating bonus assignments for both a course with a points gradebook, as well as a course with a weighted gradebook.
Bonus Item in a Points Grading System
When creating a bonus item in a course with a Points grading system it is important to know the following things:
- Bonus Items in Categories
- Although it is not completely necessary to put a bonus item, or any grade item, in a grade category for a Points grading system, it is a good practice to have a gradebook separated into categories.
- If you would like to have the bonus item only apply to a single category, make sure that in the Grading section for the category the Can Exceed box is unchecked, as shown below. This will allow a max grade of 100% for the specific category.
- If you would like to have the bonus item only apply to an entire gradebook, make sure that in the Grading section for the category the Can Exceed box is checked, as shown below. This will allow for the points to exceed the max points for a category, if applicable.

- Creating the Bonus Item
- When creating the grade item, type the number of points you wish the bonus item to be worth in the Max. Points textbox.
- Make sure that you also have the Bonus box checked, as shown below.
- When finished click Save and your Bonus item will appear in the Grades List with a star next to it, as shown below.

Bonus Item in a Weighted Grading System
When creating a bonus item in a course with a Weighted grading system it is important to know the following things:
- Bonus Items in Categories
- When creating a bonus item in a Weighted grading system, it is necessary to have your gradebook separtated into categories.
- If you would like to have the bonus item only apply to a category, make sure that in the Grading section for the category the Allow category grade to exceed category weight box is unchecked, as shown below. This will allow a max grade of 100% for the specific category.
- If you would like to have the bonus item only apply to an entire gradebook, make sure that in the Grading section for the category the Allow category grade to exceed category weight box is checked, as shown below. This will allow for the points to exceed the max percentage for a category, if applicable.

- Creating the Bonus Item
- When creating the grade item, type the number of points you wish the bonus item to be worth in the Max. Points textbox.
- In the Weight text box, type the weight of the bonus item as a percentage of the parent category.
- Make sure that you also have the Bonus box checked, as shown below.
- When finished click Save and your Bonus item will appear in the Grades List with a star next to it, as shown below.
