D2L - Roles and Permissions

Overview

Desire2Learn assigns users a role in each course based on the type of access and range of functionality they require. Here at CU, the roles have been developed in consultation with faculty so they meet the most common teaching needs for course managers and put appropriate boundaries on the access of course participants.

Course Managers

The following roles allow access to course management tools to add content, create quizzes and assignments, enter grades, enroll participants, and otherwise develop and manage the course.

Role Purpose Unique Characteristics

Instructor

Full access to all course management tools

Can add participants except students. For a step-by-step guide to adding participants to your course, visit the Adding Participant tutorial.

Teaching Assistant

Access to all course management tools

Same characteristics as Instructors except:

  • Can delete content, grade items, and grades but no other course components.
  • Cannot see authors of anonymous discussion posts
  • Cannot add or change enrollments

TA No Gradebook

Access to all course management tools except grade tools

Same as TA, but does not have access to the grades tool (i.e., no ability to grade quizzes, add grades, or view grades).   

TA - Limited Access to enter and export grades Can enter and export grades in the gradebook, but has no ability to create or edit content or quiz settings.

Course Participants

The following roles allow access to view content, complete quizzes and upload assignments, contribute to discussions, and otherwise participate in the course:

DEMO STUDENT ONLY

For Instructors and others managing the course to view course components as a student, for testing purposes

Added by OIT to each course classlist as “!Impersonate Me!”

Stdnt Xtended Access

Extends student access beyond normal term dates

Added to course by OIT, at the request of the Instructor via email to help@colorado.edu or call to (303) 735-HELP.

Auditor

Same role as student, ability to access and participate in course as determined by Instructor

Can be added to course by Instructor or OIT via email to help@colorado.edu or call to (303) 735-HELP

Auditor-graded/stats

Same role as student, ability to access and participate in course as determined by Instructor

Participation is included in the course statistics & gradebook.

Can be added to course by Instructor or OIT via email to help@colorado.edu or call to (303) 735-HELP

Observer

Access to all course management tools but cannot edit or delete content; useful for peer observation of course, evaluation, or program assessment; does not appear in classlist

Can be added to course by OIT via email to help@colorado.edu or call to (303) 735-HELP. 

Community Courses

The following roles pertain to Community Courses, which are non-ISIS courses available by request to CU faculty and staff as well as student groups sanctioned by the Student Organizations Finance Office.

Role Purpose Unique Characteristics

Community Course Leader

Full access to all course management tools (appears as "Cmty Course Leader" in D2L)

Can add Community Course Participants.

Community Course Participant

Full participation (appears as "Cmty Course Particip" in D2L)
