Managed Services - RedHat End User Site License
The RedHat software and updates are available for personal computers at no cost. Follow the steps listed below. If you have questions or concerns, contact Managed Services at 303-492-6096 or trouble@satellite.colorado.edu.
RedHat Versions
If you don't already have RedHat Enterprise Linux installed on your computer, or are contemplating upgrading, decide whether you want RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) or RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4).
Installing RedHat Enterprise Linux
If you need to install RedHat but don't have a set of installation CDs -- or the single installation DVD -- you can download the appropriate ISO files, burn them to CDs/DVD, insert the first disk, and boot from the CDROM drive. For RHEL5, also download the install codes. Follow instructions to install RedHat in the usual way.
After initial installation of RHEL4:
On the first reboot after the installation is complete, a Red Hat Login screen will appear. At this screen, check "Tell me why I need to register and provide a Red Hat Login" and click Next.
On the next screen, check "I can not complete registration at this time. Remind me Later." Click Next, and follow the remaining steps on firstboot.
After initial installation of RHEL5 or RHEL6:
On the first reboot after the installation is complete, as you go through the dialogues, a window entitled "Set Up Software Updates" will come up. Click on "No, I prefer to register at a later time." Then click "Forward".
Another dialogue will open saying, "Are you sure you don't want to connect your system to Red Hat Network?" Click "No thanks, I'll connect later."
At the next screen, which says "Finish Updates Setup", click "Forward", and follow the remaining steps on firstboot.
How to Register
After RedHat (either RHEL4 or RHEL5) is installed, download the script EndUser-Bootstrap.sh from the activation keys website; use your CU Login Name and IdentiKey password. Then open up a terminal window and run the bootstrap script, as root. (The command is "/bin/sh ./bootstrap.sh".) When asked if you wish to install the GPG public key, click Yes.
Getting regular RedHat updates
Now that you're registered, you can get free RedHat updates and patches at no cost from our CU-Boulder RedHat satellite server on a regular basis. This will keep your software packages up-to-date, fix bugs, and address security issues as soon as they arise. On your computer simply run the command "yum update" (RHEL5) or "up2date" (RHEL4).
