Network Switch Upgrade

Overview 

OIT is working in coordination with a local contractor to upgrade network switches in buildings throughout campus from September though November.This is the next step toward upgrading the wireless and wired networks on our campus. Please see the Project Timeline below to see a list of buildings that will be affected by this upgrade.

Description 
Replacing the network switches will involve localized network outages so the work will take place between 6 pm and 6 am in administrative buildings and from 10 pm to 6 am in buildings with classrooms. OIT will work with your departmental Computer Support Representative (CSR) to schedule and communicate outages in your building and ensure that the switch upgrade work is sensitive to late-night or early-morning activities and special events in your building. Customer Benefit 
The upgrading of network switches is the next step toward enabling wired network speeds up to 1 gigabit per second which is a tenfold increase over our current network standard of 100 megabits per second. This change will also allow for improvements in our wireless network, making it possible to upgrade our wireless access points for increased speed and capacity.

Project Timeline

The work will take place in six phases from September through November. The following phase list is preliminary pending scheduling feedback from departmental Computer Support Representatives. E-mails will also be relayed through CSRs both one week and two days before switch replacement work reaches a building.

Phase 1, Sept. 17-21:  Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Drescher Undergraduate Engineering (ITLL), Electrical Engineering, Engineering Administration Bldg., Engineering Classroom, Engineering North Tower, Engineering Office Tower, Engineering South Tower, Engineering Stores & Labs, Mechanical Engineering.

Phase 2, Sept. 24 - Oct. 5: ATLAS, Distribution Center, Hellems, Koelbel Bldg. - Business, Norlin Library,Telecommunications Center, Visual Arts, Wolf Law.

Phase 3, Oct. 8-18 : Benson Earth Sciences, Discovery Learning Center, Duane Physics, Environmental Design, LASP (main campus), Mathematics, MCD Biology, Muenzinger, Porter, Ramaley.
