Update 12:05 p.m.
To the CU community,
As outlined below, UIS experienced a significant service outage today, including all enterprise systems (ISIS, Fin HR and eRA) as well as email services for the Office of the President. The current status is that the cu.edu Web site is off-line as is the student admissions application. We anticipate bringing the admissions application back on-line later today. All other enterprise services should be accessible at this time. While the UIS team and campus partners have attempted to keep many of you informed during the morning by phone, the purpose of this email is to summarize the outage and recovery actions.
The issues today (Wednesday, November 09th) began at approximately 3:30am MST when UIS technical support was alerted. Over the subsequent several hours the root cause of the problem was identified as our www.cu.edu server flooding the network with spurious traffic which prevented network access to the other enterprise servers in our main data center. Once we took www.cu.edu offline mid-morning, access to our other enterprise services, which were operational but inaccessible during the outage, was restored. www.cu.edu will remain off-line while we complete a full analysis of the issues and can ensure that we can bring it back on-line safely. At this time we do not have an estimate of when that might be.
I apologize, on behalf of UIS, for both the outage and, more importantly, for the impact to you, our customers, in terms of your ability to use our enterprise systems to do your jobs. Realizing the importance of conducting daily operations, and thus enterprise systems, to the University of Colorado, the impact to the campuses and the cross-campus functions is unacceptable and we will make every effort to prevent similar outages in the future.
