Desire2Learn Outage Summary & Apology

Last Updated: 05/20/2013

A Desire2Learn (D2L) hosting infrastructure problem that affected CU-Boulder’s collaborative learning environment, and a quarter of D2L clients, from January 29 to February 1, has been attributed to a process D2L employed to migrate data to upgraded networking and storage equipment. Below is a link to a report from D2L’s COO which summarizes the root issues and causes of the outage and another link to an apology from D2L’s CEO.

Though D2L appears stable at this time, we at CU-Boulder are determined to not risk another significant disruption. The leadership of OIT continues to meet with D2L leadership and we are reviewing with CU-Boulder faculty, students and staff, the logistics and challenges of hosting D2L in-house. When the path forward has been discerned, follow-up communication will be sent to all faculty, staff and students.
