Microsoft Select Program

Last Updated: 04/03/2013
Overview

The state of Colorado has a contract with Insight to cover the Microsoft Select program. Purchasing through this contract is optional to state agencies such as the University of Colorado at Boulder but for Microsoft products the pricing is very good. This pricing is especially good for purchasing multiple copies of software for offices or labs.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The Microsoft Select program is currently going under renewal negotiation between the Colorado’s Division of Finance and Procurement and Insight, the Microsoft licensing solution partner. Due to this negotiation currently the Microsoft Select program is unavailable, yet expected to be renewed some time in April. Please visit the Microsoft Select news story for more information.

The Select Program is available for all software licenses that are not covered under the Microsoft Software Campus Agreement.

When a license purchase is made under the Select Program, the ordering department is only buying authorization to have Microsoft software on their machines. Your department will only receive an invoice with this purchase; no license certificate, disks, or manuals. You must order disks and documentation either on your purchase order or separately. Each software CD costs an additional $23 (approx).

Prices are updated periodically; here is the latest list as a PDF file:

Purchasing a "plain" license lets you run the current version of that software on the computer indefinitely. Purchasing the license with Software Assurance ("LIC/SA, License & Maintenance" on the price list) gives you the right to upgrade to newer versions of the software as they are released, without additional expense, through February 2013.

Note: Windows Home editions (Vista Home, Vista Home Premium, and Windows 7 Home Premium) are not suitable for faculty or staff use at CU-Boulder. OIT recommends versions named "Pro", "Business", or "Enterprise".

Who can get it

This service is available to faculty and staff only.

How to get it

*Note: The following information is dependent on the renewal of the Select Agreement.

Ordering from Insight

The phone number for ordering is 1-800-269-2523.

To place an order, you will be asked for the following information:

  • name
  • phone
  • email address
  • ACARD number
  • Postal address (and shipping address, if you order CDs)
  • UCB Insight account number (1284660 for ACARD, 1294034 for purchase orders)

For your purchase, you receive an invoice by email. Be sure to save the invoice as proof of your purchase and your right to install/use the software. For a more formal-looking invoice, in the form of a printable PDF file (also sent by email), wait 2 days after purchase and then request it from Insight.

You can then schedule an OIT Student Desktop Support Technician visit by calling the the OIT Service Center at 5-HELP (303-735-4357). The Student Desktop Support Technician has the necessary CDs to install the software, and will need to see your (email) invoice from Insight.

If your department requires a copy of the media (CDs and DVDs) then they must be purchased as well. Each set of media currently costs about $23 through Insight.

How to get CD keys

Newer Microsoft products may require an installation key; contact the OIT Site Licensing office, sitelic@colorado.edu (Boulder campus only).
