IT security training is mandatory for all University of Colorado employees. This was relayed to CU-Boulder employees by Chancellor Peterson. As employees of the university we are each entrusted with protecting the campus computing and networking resources as well as protecting sensitive information. A security training program has been designed by the System IT Security Office with the intent of clarifying this responsibility. This website will provide you with information about that training.
On November 2, 2007 the following E-memo was sent from the Office of the Chancellor.
To: Boulder Campus Teaching & Research Faculty, Staff, Deans, Directors, Dept Chairs, System Administration
From: Office of the Chancellor
Sender: Chancellor G.P. "Bud" Peterson
Date: November 2, 2007
Subject: Information Security Responsibilities – Action Required
President Brown announced last month that IT security training would be mandatory for all University of Colorado employees. As employees of the university we are each entrusted with protecting the campus computing and networking resources as well as protecting sensitive information. A security training program has been designed by the System IT Security Office with the intent of clarifying this responsibility.
The Boulder campus will be deploying the training in several phases over the coming months. The schedule is as follows:
- On November 8, 2007 all employees in the IT Technician and IT Professional classes will automatically be enrolled in both the basic and advanced training modules. The training needs to be completed by January 7, 2008.
- On December 1, 2007 all classified staff and professional exempt employees will automatically be enrolled in the basic security training module. The training needs to be completed by January 31, 2008.
- On February 1, 2008 all faculty will automatically be enrolled in the basic security training module. The training needs to be completed by April 30, 2008.
Once you have been automatically enrolled on the date listed above, you will receive an e-mail from the CU-Boulder IT Security Office with step-by-step instructions on how to access and complete the training. The modules typically require 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
I understand this is an additional commitment for your already busy schedule, but it is important for all of us to make time to complete the training in the timeframe established. The university is a daily target of hackers trying to steal private information about our employees, students, and customers. Some recent breaches of our sensitive data have demonstrated a strong need to inform the campus community about how to better protect our data and ourselves from these attacks. I strongly urge you to complete this mandatory training at your earliest opportunity.
