Accounts - Faculty, Staff, and Retirees

Last Updated: 09/27/2011
Overview

In order to get the most out of the campus IT environment you will need an e-mail account and an IdentiKey. OIT has created these for you, now you need to activate your IdentiKey.

Retirees

Upon retirement, you will get to keep your e-mail account and IdentiKey.

Accounts

E-mail and Calendar Service

What is it:

  • Your @colorado.edu e-mail address and a collaborative calendar service.

Who gets it:

  • All faculty and staff members.

Why you should use it:

  • E-mail is an official means of communication on the CU-Boulder campus. You will receive important information via e-mail from the university.

How to access it:

When you get it:

  • Exchange accounts
    • Soon after your IdentiKey is activated, your Exchange account will be automatically provisioned.

Manage it:

  • CU-Boulder's Identity Manager allows you to set how your outgoing e-mail address is displayed, create alternate addresses, and adjust where your e-mail is delivered to. For faculty and staff, e-mail delivery can only be set to on-campus e-mail addresses.
IdentiKey

Who gets it:

  • All faculty and staff members.

What is it:

An IdentiKey consists of a CU login name and an IdentiKey password. IdentiKeys play a large role in computing at CU-Boulder.

An IdentiKey gives you access to:

  • MyCUInfo, the student and faculty portal
  • My.CU, the employee portal
  • CUConnect, the legacy portal that still contains some tools and features
  • E-mail services like CULink and OIT's Microsoft Exchange service.
  • Computers in OIT computing labs.
  • UCB Wireless network.
  • CULearn, learning management program.
  • SkillSoft computer based training.
  • IdentiKey is managed with CU-Boulder's Identity Manager.

When you get it:

  • After your information is entered into the payroll system, your IdentiKey will be set for creation. This process may take up to 48 hours. If you cannot activate your account, ask your payroll liaison to check on your entry.

Activate it:

  • Learn more about IdentiKey, including how to activate it at the IdentiKey page.

Manage it:

  • Once your account is activated you can log in to all those services listed above. Use CU-Boulder's Identity Manager to change your password, or reset it if you've forgotten it.
Specialty Account Creation (SAC)

What is it:

Specialty Account Creation (SAC) is a web tool that students, faculty, and staff use to create specialty accounts on servers they have been granted access. These servers are not centrally managed by OIT, but by other departments.

Who gets to use the tool:

Only faculty, staff, or students that have been granted access by an administrator. If you are required to use a specialty account for a course or to access a specific resource, you will be instructed to do so. If not, this tool is not for you.

How to create your specialty account:

  • The Specialty Account Creation (SAC) tool is at https://sac.colorado.edu.
  • After selecting the host, you will enter your CU Login Name and IdentiKey password to create your account.
  • Your account's credentials will be the same as your IdentiKey, at the time of creation. If you ever change your IdentiKey password, you need to return to this tool and follow the steps above to synchronize your specialty account with your IdentiKey password.
Unix Server Accounts

What is it:

  • An account on an OIT unix server, like spot.colorado.edu or rintintin.colorado.edu.
  • Uses your CU Login Name and a unique password, which you choose. You can make this password the same as your IdentiKey.
  • Used primarily as an authentication method to manage departmental webpages on www.colorado.edu.
  • Also used to host individual faculty and staff websites. Click here to learn more.
  • Can be used as an e-mail delivery destination, and has PINE, IMAP, and POP capabilities. However, it is not OIT's recommended solution. Learn more about this.

Who gets it:

  • Faculty and staff members that request it.

How to get it:

Manage it:

  • To change your unix server password login via a SSH terminal application and type the command passwd. Or contact the IT Service Center.

Additional considerations:

As stated above, unix server accounts are used primarily for managed departmental or club websites on www.colorado.edu. In some instances, the unix server account used is what's called a "group account" or "secondary account." Learn more about this kind of account.
