SPECIAL STUDENT RELIEF FOR J-1 STUDENTS:

Special Student Relief (SSR) allows certain J-1 students to:

  1. Work on-campus more than 20 hours/week while school is in session, or
  2. Work off-campus more than 20 hours/week while school is in session, and
  3. Take a minimum courseload of 3 credit hours (graduate students ) or 6 credit hours (undergraduates) IF THEY HAVE PERMISSION TO WORK MORE THAN 20 HOURS PER WEEK WHILE SCHOOL IS IN SESSION.
ELIGIBILITY:
  • Student's means of financial support must be from Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, or Korea, as reflected on the DS2019 (formerly known as the IAP-66)
  • Students must demonstrate severe economic hardship due to current economic crisis in these countries
  • Students must currently be in status and carrying a full course of study
On-Campus Work Permission (More than 20hrs/week during school):
This is approved by your Responsible Officer.

What You Must Do:

  1. Bring your copy of your DS2019 (formerly known as IAP-66) to ISSS: your source of funding must be from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines or from Indonesia.
  2. Bring in documentation of your severe economic hardship (e.g. a bank statement, explanation of why you must work more hours, a list of your expenditures and income, etc.)
What ISSS will do:
  • Date, sign and notate your DS2019 for the Special Student Relief as: " Special Student Relief work authorization granted from (date) until (date)"

Reduced Course Load:

J-1 students who are approved to work more than 20hrs/week while school is in session can also apply for a reduced course load. You will still have to register and take a minimum number of courses per semester.

  • For undergraduate students, you must take at least 6 credit hours/semester
  • For graduate students, you must take at least 3 credit hours/semester
What You Must Do to Apply:
  1. Apply and be approved for work permission that is more than 20 hours/week during school (see above)
  2. Apply for a Reduced Course Load to ISSS or your Responsible Officer

What ISSS will do:

  1. Date, sign and notate your DS2019 for a Reduced Course Load as: " Reduced Course Load authorized"

NOTE: You must have the approval of your Responsible Officer for both on-campus work permission for more than 20hours/week and to take a Reduced Course Load.

Off-Campus Work Permission (More Than 20 hours/week During School):

Students whose source of funding is from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines or Indonesia can also apply to work off-campus more than 20 hours a week during school to their Responsible Officer.

What You Must Do:

  1. Bring in your DS2019 (your source of funding must be from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines or Indonesia)
  2. Bring in documentation of your severe economic hardship (e.g. bank statement, explanation of your need to work more hours to avoid severe economic hardship, etc.)

What ISSS will do:

  • Date, sign and notate your DS2019 for the Special Student Relief: " Special Student Relief recommended from (date) until (date)"

NOTE: Students can apply for the Special Student Relief for up to one year, or until the graduation date on your DS2019, whichever is earlier.
