What is BFIS?
Boulder
Friends of International Students is an organization sponsored
by the University of Colorado that matches international
students with host families in the Boulder area. Potential
hosts and students complete questionnaires that reveal common
interests. From these questionnaires, matches between hosts
and students are made for a period of one semester to several
years, depending on the length of stay of the student.
Hosts and students generally meet one or two times
each month.
BFIS is
operated by a Board of Directors, a CU
International Student and Scholar Services
liaison and a student employee, who serves as
the matching coordinator. The
board directors are Jim Fisher, Allan Wright,
Cesar Gellido and Nils Tellier. Our liaison between BFIS
and International Student and Scholar Services
is Paige Progar-Jaumann. When you email
bfis@colorado.edu, you are contacting the
matching coordinator. This year you will
be in touch with Carey Folbrecht, a student at
the University of Colorado who studies Theatre
and Spanish.
The Boulder
Friends of International Students, founded in
1955, is Boulder,
Colorado's oldest volunteer organization.
In the 2008-2009
school year, BFIS welcomed 66
international students and 9 new hosts/host
families. Currently, we have 103 active
hosts/host families. Hosts have the
opportunity to befriend all types of
international students. Our students come to study in
all fields, and at all degree levels.
Some hosts befriend a student who is staying for
the duration of a study abroad, and others are
matched with students that will remain in
Boulder for many years as they complete doctoral
degrees! These students come from many of
countries across the globe. Here's the break down on who
applied to BFIS,
by student nationality, for this academic year.
