Dr. Robert McNown

Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year Xiwei Guo

Study Abroad Student of the Year

Azuraye Wycoff

Dr. Robert McNown, Professor of Economics, has demonstrated again and again throughout the years what it means to be a global citizen.  He has taught at various institutions around the world, has mentored a number of CU-Boulder international students and students interested in studies abroad, has written numerous articles for U.S. and international academic journals, has taught on three voyages of Semester at Sea and has received numerous Fulbright awards. He also brings colleagues from around the world here to conduct research on their own Fulbright programs.  Under Dr. McNown's tenure from 2007 to 2013 as Director of the International Affairs program at CU-Boulder, the Program became the top major at CU-Boulder for the number of students going abroad.  Dr. McNown strongly supported the integration of study abroad courses into the IAFS curriculum, making it easy for IAFS majors to incorporate study abroad into their degree programs.  In addition, he joined the Study Abroad Committee in 2007 and has been a strong supporter of efforts to increase international opportunities for all students in all academic fields. He also serves on the Executive Committee for the Center for Asian Studies. Dr. McNown has positively impacted CU-Boulder students over the years, quietly opening doors to the world for hundreds of students.  He is truly a Global Citizen who continues to bring CU to the world.

Xiwei Guo, undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, is actively creating global crossroads at CU. Xiwei was the 2013 Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA) President, coordinating several important events on the Boulder campus including the Fall Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese New Year celebrations and participating in CU Boulder’s annual International Festival to promote mutual understanding and good will between cultures at CU. He has extensively aided in launching university outreach programs in China run by the Office of Parent Relations (OPR), CU Chancellor Di Stefano and the Office of International Education (OIE) in order to meet Chinese students, the parents of current and prospective students and CU alumni living in China. Xiwei volunteered to assist in the program preparation, designed the university’s outreach presentation and then participated in events in Beijing and Shanghai. Through his sincerity and quiet resolve he built bridges of understanding with CU’s Chinese constituents. Xiwei continued to work closely with the OPR when they invited the parents of Chinese students to spend a week visiting the Boulder campus. He organized meetings with his fellow CSSA students to promote the trip, participated in workshops and tours held for the parents and served as the personal translator for the Chancellor at a dinner for the Chinese parents at the Chancellor’s residence. Xiwei’s work as a global citizen fosters a deeper understanding of what it means to be a “Buff.”

Azuraye Wycoff has an outstanding record of cross-cultural achievement and international relations work as an undergraduate student studying for a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs. For the academic year 2013-2014, she studied abroad in Nanjing, China where she studied Mandarin intensively, and worked as a translator and editor of a dual-language Chinese magazine, MAP. In Boulder, Azuraye interned and is now a board member of the United Nations Association of Boulder County (UNA-BC), where she collaborates with local grassroots movements to educate, inspire and mobilize her community to support human rights. In spring 2013, she collaborated with Project Nur and CU Amnesty International to organize a Syrian Benefit Night. She also organized UNA-BC’s first booth at the Boulder-Creek festival to promote the UN’s effort to supply developing nations with clean drinking water. Currently she is a leadership fellow of Project Pengyou, a Harvard-based Sino-US relations grassroots organization, and is involved in starting a Boulder campus chapter of the project. Next summer she intends to return to China to start a program teaching English to high school students in Nanjing, eventually tailoring the curriculum to teaching business professionals, business and conversational English. Azuraye continually demonstrates her global citizenship through her dedication to cultural awareness, intercultural understanding and human rights.
