2015 Winners:

Global Citizen of the Year

Antonio Papuzza

Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year Ashmi Desai

Antonio Papuzza: for more than eight years, students at Leeds and across campus have benefited from Antonio’s expertise in cross cultural management and from his passion for exploring the interplay between business and culture. Academically, Antonio’s contributions include teaching International Management, Global Emerging Markets, a Global Seminar on Leading and Managing across Cultures in Northern Europe, and a First-Year Global Experience in Italy. He is also the program director of the Indonesian Business and Culture Global Experience. Antonio is very generous with his time and knowledge, acting as the faculty advisor for AISEC as well as for both the undergraduate and graduate International Business Clubs, regularly delivering cross-cultural training workshops for students traveling abroad, training peer mentors for international students, initiating and participating in the international business coffee hour, and conducting workshops on international careers. He designed and successfully delivered the Go Global Boot Camp last summer, which prepares students for the global job market and helps them develop their global competencies. He is constantly generating ideas for new global student programs and for improving his global knowledge. A global citizen has been defined as someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices. This defines Antonio Papuzza.

Ashmi Desai (PhD student in Media Studies) came to CU Boulder knowing what it means to communicate with a global audience. She spent 5 years as a copy editor for the world’s highest circulated English language daily newspaper, The Times of India. Ashmi has continued to pursue her passion for communication and development for social change during her time at the University of Colorado Boulder through her work with the United Nations Association Boulder County, where she supports the effort to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. She has brought increased understanding and compassion for the plight of the women, men, and children living in the Indian forests of Chahattisharh through talks at the Boulder Public Library. She has presented her research at international conferences and has conducted guest lectures on cross-cultural topics and workshops on campus. Ashmi’s efforts continue far beyond the borders of campus as she reaches a global audience through her YouTube videos focused on Malaria prevention and her podcasts on global Indian culture, Bollywood, and daily life in Boulder. With her global focus, her local impact, and her international efforts to promote social change, Ashmi Desai embodies what it means to be a global citizen, a leader on campus, and a deserving recipient of the 2015 Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year award.
