Satya Peram: As a resident staff member of Graduate and Family Housing, Satya has demonstrated a wide range of skills in supporting the success of the most globally diverse living/learning community of over 3000 residents in the larger Boulder area. Satya has made significant contributions in connecting and supporting the intercultural learning and active engagement of a wide range of international and domestic residents through his skillful orchestration of activities. As head of the International Cooking Club, Satya created opportunities for people from diverse cultures to come together to learn about cultural traditions and traditional foods, to discuss the intellectual work that brought these residents to CU, and to create and strengthen friendships in their interim home. As head Garden Liaison, he initiated and oversaw the effort to add 30 more garden plots to the Westend Community Garden, and created a farm-to-table harvest event in September. He is most passionate about developing relationships with diverse residents and empowering them to become involved in community-building activities.  Through Satya’s work, we have seen a significant increase in the number and diversity of residents that are reaching out across differences to create deeper connections and appreciative understanding. What stands out is Satya’s belief that we are more whole when we connect with each other and learn about, appreciate, and celebrate our diverse learning community, and his passion for connecting and inspiring others in the unique international community in Graduate & Family Housing.

Khalid AlAwadhi: As President of CU International, Khalid Alawadhi enthusiastically works to connect international and domestic students by leading weekly meetings, creating events, holding the leadership team accountable, and through his huge contributions to the international festival committee. Khalid’s commitment to excellence, genuine interest in each member of CU International, and passion for making international students’ experiences at CU positive and meaningful led to his selection to introduce Chancellor DiStefano at the International Student Orientation in August. Driven by his commitment to making CU a better learning experience for all international students, Khalid is well-known for his welcoming demeanor and his enthusiasm. The personal connections he has built through International Coffee Hour and Where’s the Food Fridays have truly made a difference for the experience of hundreds of students on campus by building bridges and connecting cultures and we look forward to seeing him further develop in his role as a campus leader

Muntadher AlZayer: Muntadher AlZayer has made a positive impact on hundreds of students, staff, and faculty members here at CU through his involvement in planning events such as ‘Comics and Culture’, weekly International Coffee Hour, and his work as Vice President of Project Nur at CU Boulder. A student-led initiative cultivating an environment of acceptance and mutual respect between Muslims and all communities, the group works with American Muslims and non-Muslims to promote principles of human and civil rights in the United States and around the world. Munta’s leadership skills, positive attitude, kindness, and aptitude for communication are key to the group’s initiatives to promote understanding through education. Currently, he is working on a partnership with the Cultural Unity & Engagement Center to host an event in January focused on supporting Muslim students on campus and debunking some of the myths surrounding Islam. During his time at CU, Munta has made outstanding contributions to international understanding and community awareness of global issues, and we are proud to award him the Muneeb Kamal International Student of the Year award

Austin Riley: Austin is a Civil Engineering student with a minor in Global Engineering. He is a part of the BS/MS Program and will be studying engineering for developing communities as his Master’s degree. Building on his study abroad experiences in Madrid, Spain and Rosario, Argentina, Austin traveled to Huacapongo, Peru as part of an Engineers Without Borders implementation trip during summer 2016. When construction of a water pipeline was halted due to opposition from a neighboring community, Austin’s mediation and leadership helped the team to navigate intricate sociopolitical territory and maintain the chapter’s relationship with the region. Austin has consistently established long term personal connections that transcend international boundaries, whether he is exploring Tanzania; welcoming students at International Coffee Hour; coordinating the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Symposium; or organizing ethnic-food potlucks with domestic and international students at CU. Through his consistent commitment to intercultural connection, Austin has enriched CU, Boulder, and the myriad places he has traveled, as well as helping to develop a global state of mind in those around him.”
