Discrimination and Harassment Training Requirements

TO: Teaching & Research Faculty, Staff, Deans, Directors,
Dept Chairs, System Administration
FROM: Philip P. DiStefano, Chancellor
SENDER: Office of Discrimination and Harassment
DATE: September 1, 2009
SUBJECT: Protected Class Discrimination and Harassment: Policies and Training Information

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the University of Colorado at Boulder Discrimination and Harassment Policy and the University of Colorado Sexual Harassment Policy, and their importance.

In order to create a positive learning, working and living environment, the University is committed to providing an atmosphere free of discrimination and harassment based upon race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, age, religion, creed, sexual orientation, disability, and veteran status. In an effort to create such an environment, University of Colorado at Boulder staff and student employees are required to attend a discrimination and harassment workshop within their first 30 days of employment. All CU-Boulder faculty members must attend a discrimination and harassment workshop within their first semester of employment. After this initial workshop, all employees are required to take a discrimination and harassment training at least once every five years; however, some departments require employees to attend training more frequently, which I applaud.

Please review the protected class discrimination and harassment and sexual harassment policies and procedures at www.colorado.edu/odh/policies.html. All CU-Boulder employees are expected to adhere to these policies and procedures, especially the supervisory obligation to report allegations of discrimination and harassment to the appropriate Discrimination and Harassment Officer. You can also obtain general information about discrimination and harassment, statistical information and workshop schedules from the website: www.colorado.edu/odh. If you have any questions regarding discrimination and harassment, the training program or would like to arrange a training session for your department, please contact the Office of Discrimination and Harassment at 303-492-2127.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in helping to create a welcoming environment and respectful climate for everyone in our community.

Philip P. DiStefano, chancellor
University of Colorado at Boulder
