Program Requirements and Opportunities

All new students must attend the Norlin Scholar welcome dinner, orientation, and retreat in the fall semester. With the exception of students enrolled in the Engineering Honors Program, new students should enroll, as well, in NRLN 2000--Ways of Knowing: Constructions of Knowledge in the Academy and Beyond (preferably in their first semester).

Additionally, new students will meet with the director during their first semester as a scholar to consult about the student's academic plan and, later, to talk about the student's research, scholarly or creative project(s).

All Norlin Scholars must fulfill the following requirements in order to retain their scholarships.

  • Take at least two Norlin classes in four years if the student is a first year student.*
  • Take at least one Norlin class in two years if the student is a rising junior.*
  • Undertake a research, scholarly or creative project within the student's discipline or write an honors thesis.
  • Keep a consistent GPA of 3.25 and be registered full time (minimum of 12 credits/semester).
  • Maintain regular contact with the Director of the program regarding research, fulfillment of requirements, academic progress, studying abroad, time out, etc.
  • Adhere to the University's codes of professional, academic, disciplinary and personal conduct.

*Students must take one of their classes in their first year with the program so as to show reasonable progress toward the requirements.

We also encourage students to participate in the following Norlin Scholar optional academic and professional activities

  • Norlin Scholarship selection process
  • Student Advisory Board
  • Assisting with new student orientation
  • Recruitment events promoting Norlin or other Undergraduate Enrichment Programs
  • Mentoring or tutoring other scholars
  • Facilitating our Pre-professor (PreProf) Training by being an undergraduate lead for the Graduate Teacher Program
  • Sharing research or work in progress in the student's major with other students at UA Monthly Forum presentations
  • Participating in the PreProf series
  • Initiating a Norlin Scholars academic activity or event on your own (with Director's approval)

Students should also strongly consider:

  • Taking Honors courses
  • Preparing for Top Scholarships (Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, etc.)
  • Participating in internships and/or community service activities
  • Studying abroad in junior or senior year

Students who participate beyond the basic requirements of the program may be eligible for additional scholarship monies or funds for research, internships, or other enrichment activities.

The scholarship may be revoked at any time for failure to meet program requirements and/or at the discretion of the Norlin Scholars director.
