Program Requirements
and Opportunities
All new students must attend the Norlin Scholar welcome
dinner, orientation, and retreat in the fall semester. With the exception
of students enrolled in the Engineering Honors Program, new students should
enroll, as well, in NRLN 2000--Ways
of Knowing: Constructions of Knowledge in the Academy and Beyond (preferably
in their first semester).
Additionally, new students will meet with the director
during their first semester as a scholar to consult about the student's
academic plan and, later, to talk about the student's research, scholarly
or creative project(s).
All Norlin Scholars
must fulfill the following requirements in order to retain their scholarships.
- Take at least two
Norlin classes in four years if the student is a first year student.*
- Take at least one
Norlin class in two years if the student is a rising junior.*
- Undertake a research,
scholarly or creative project within the student's discipline or write
an honors thesis.
- Keep a consistent
GPA of 3.25 and be registered full time (minimum of 12 credits/semester).
- Maintain regular
contact with the Director of the program regarding research, fulfillment
of requirements, academic progress, studying abroad, time out, etc.
- Adhere to the University's
codes of professional, academic, disciplinary and personal conduct.
*Students must take one of their classes in their first
year with the program so as to show reasonable progress toward the requirements.
We also encourage students to participate in the following
Norlin Scholar optional academic and professional activities
- Norlin Scholarship
selection process
- Student
Advisory Board
- Assisting with
new student orientation
- Recruitment events
promoting Norlin or other Undergraduate Enrichment Programs
- Mentoring or tutoring
other scholars
- Facilitating our
Pre-professor (PreProf) Training
by being an undergraduate lead for the Graduate
Teacher Program
- Sharing research
or work in progress in the student's major with other students at UA
Monthly Forum presentations
- Participating in
the PreProf series
- Initiating a Norlin
Scholars academic activity or event on your own (with Director's approval)
Students should also
strongly consider:
- Taking Honors
courses
- Preparing for Top
Scholarships (Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, etc.)
- Participating in
internships and/or community service activities
- Studying abroad
in junior or senior year
Students who participate
beyond the basic requirements of the program may be eligible for additional
scholarship monies or funds for research, internships, or other enrichment
activities.

The scholarship may be revoked at any time
for failure to meet program requirements and/or at the discretion
of the Norlin Scholars director.
