Kalpana Chawla, Astronaut

Kalpana Chawla, an astronaut-alumna of the University of Colorado
at Boulder, was among the astronauts aboard the Columbia Shuttle,
which exploded Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. Dr. Chawla is the second CU-Boulder
astronaut-alumnus to perish in a shuttle explosion. The first was Ellison
Onizuka, who died when the Challenger Shuttle exploded in 1986.

Dr. Chawla received her doctor of philosophy degree in aerospace
engineering at CU-Boulder in 1988. The Columbia shuttle flight was
her second space flight.
