Engineers Without Borders-USA marks 10th anniversary

CU-Boulder will host the 2012 Mountain Region Conference for Engineers Without Borders-USA, a nonprofit organization founded by CU engineering Professor Bernard Amadei 10 years ago after he was asked to engineer a water pump for a village in Belize.

If these old trees could speak

There are only two living witnesses to the earliest days of the university’s history, and our great loss is they cannot speak.

They arrived on campus in 1879, three years after the university opened its doors to 44 students and a year after Mary Rippon, CU’s first female professor, arrived. Old Main housed the classrooms, library, janitor, President Joseph Sewall and his family.

CU community encouraged to 'Live Free' from alcohol and drugs

As part of the fourth annual Live Free Weekend, the University of Colorado Boulder community is being encouraged to take a pledge to forego all alcohol use for 96 hours from Oct. 4-8.

Presented by the CU-Boulder student group Oasis and Counseling and Psychological Services, the pledge also includes no recreational drugs for all participants. Numerous free activities including a film screening, ultimate Frisbee tournament, intramural sports, rock climbing and yoga sessions will be offered throughout the weekend to highlight substance-abuse-free lifestyles.

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program invites you to join us in our workshop series this fall on various work life balance topics including: Natural ways to manage stress, investment, skills to deal with life transitions, etc. Workshops are delivered by professionals from the community through individual presentations, panel discussion, and roundtables. Artist Series: Johannes Moser, cello with the CU Symphony Orchestra

Praised for his eclectic style that ranges from "lovely and elegant" to "vigorous, with rock star energy," Johannes Moser is one of the electrifying young talents in contemporary classical performance. Moser will perform with the CU Symphony Orchestra in Macky Auditorium Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $14, discounts available for the CU community.

Panel discussion on "end of time - concept of Messiah..." on Sept. 27

Rumi Club invites you to a panel discussion on "the end of time - The concept of Messiah in Judaism, Christianity and Islam" moderated by Brian Catlos of Religious Studies, at Eaton Humanities Room 150 on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. A reception will follow the panel at 7:20 p.m. with traditional food.

GEA Retreat | Get Inspired and Immersed in Entrepreneurship

In a restaurant not far up Boulder canyon, graduate students, entrepreneurs, angels, VCs, and entrepreneurial faculty will gather to be inspired and connect with the entrepreneurial ecosystem in and around CU. The GEA Retreat will include a keynote by Brad Feld, a number of panels, lunch, breakout sessions, and a cocktail hour to mingle with the creme dela creme!

6th Annual Buffalo Stampede 5k Run/Walk

The 6th Annual Buffalo Stampede is a 5k run to raise money for the Health Board Medical Expense Assistance Fund (MEAF). The event will be taking place on Sept. 30, 2012 starting at 9 a.m. Registration is $18.00 / person. All proceeds go to support MEAF, which helps CU students pay for medical expenses they can't afford.

Voyager: 35 years of Exploring the Solar System

LASP Public Lecture | The Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1977 and have involved several LASP scientists and engineers. Dr. Fran Bagenal will discuss the mission and the huge impact of their scientific discoveries on our understanding of the Solar System. Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the LASP LSTB building, located at 1234 Innovation Drive in the east campus research park. Parking and admission are free. Doors open at 7 p.m.
