Statement by Richard Tharp, CU Athletic Director

February 18, 2004

This evening, I have implemented an administrative action that places Head Football Coach Gary Barnett on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the independent investigation into recruiting policies and practices.

This interim action is being taken in order to do everything possible to promote the work of the independent investigation. The University, the Athletic Department, the football program and Coach Barnett need resolution of these allegations. We therefore must do everything we can to allow the panel to move forward to conduct its essential work.

I have expressed to Coach Barnett and others my concerns about his recent remarks regarding former student Katie Hnida’s athletic abilities. I agree with President Hoffman and Chancellor Byyny that these remarks were both inappropriate and insensitive in the context of her allegations of sexual assault and harassment. We urge Ms. Hnida to provide the necessary information so that a thorough investigation of these very serious allegations can take place.

Let me also emphasize that Coach Barnett’s recent remarks do not reflect the athletic department’s commitment to successful participation by female athletes in intercollegiate competition.

In the coming days, I will meet with Head Football Coach Barnett and members of the coaching staff and the football team to jointly develop a plan for moving forward during this period.
