Statement By Dick Tharp, Director Of Athletics
I would like to thank Chancellor Byyny and President Hoffman for giving me the opportunity to continue to lead the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as we implement the Action Plan announced today. I am humbled by their vote of confidence at this difficult time.
I have assured the Chancellor and President that I ˆ and the entire Athletics Department ˆ fully embrace the plan. We clearly understand the sweeping changes outlined in the plan and I am committed to seeing that those changes are made.
I have heard the criticisms over the last few months ˆ and I will do everything within my power to restore confidence in my ability to lead this department and continue making a positive contribution to the University.
Within the Athletics Department are many dedicated coaches, staff members, and administrators who want to provide the best possible University experience for our student athletes. That focus on the experience and education of students is something we share with the entire campus community. I believe that shared focus on students will be an important element of our efforts to further integrate athletics into the life of the campus.
Therefore, I am particularly pleased that the Action Plan includes goals and principles that are clearly designed to enhance the student athletes‚ overall experience ˆ in academics, campus life and personal development ˆ at the University.
Also, I am pleased to see that the plan reaffirms our department‚s Athletics 2010 Vision and plan, including the principles of the Arizona Accord. Those principles are important guideposts for the future of the department.
These have been difficult months for all of us who love the University and believe in the quality of our programs. But we intend to rise above the current challenges and create a new national model for a program of character, integrity, commitment to education, and athletic achievement.
