Organizational Changes to CU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Effective July 1, 2004

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost)
Oversees Athletics Director Change: Athletics Director no longer reports directly to the Chancellor

Purpose: Ensures Athletics Department operates as part of the academic institution, not as an independent entity
Advised by a newly created Academic Policy Board for Athletics Change: Adds Increases involvement by faculty, students and staff in athletics policy decisions

Purpose: Fosters academic success and personal well-being of student athletes as high priorities (Admission standards, recruiting practices, hiring, planning)
Oversees all academic decisions in Athletics Department (e.g. admissions, financial aid, and eligibility) Change: Academic decisions no longer made by Athletics Director and coaches

Purpose: Ensures that recruits accepted to CU are prepared to succeed academically
Recommends all athletics personnel decisions Change: Personnel recommendations are no longer solely made by the Athletics Director

Purpose: Promotes an open and fair personnel search process with involvement by faculty, staff and students
Oversees Senior Associate Athletics Director for Facilities, Development and Business Affairs Change: Senior Associate Athletics Director no longer reports directly to the Athletics Director

Purpose: More fully integrates fiscal operations into campus financial systems
Initiates an annual performance review of the Athletics Department Change: New

Purpose: Ensures progress on Action Plan


Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
New oversight of Athletics Department Change: Additional oversight of Athletics Department

Purpose: Fosters integration of athletics into campus life
Oversees Athletics Student Services Change: All athletics student services report to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Purpose: Promotes further integration of student athletes into the campus student body


Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Oversees development and adjudication of disciplinary team rules for all sports Change: All disciplinary team issues will be reviewed by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

Purpose: Maintains consistency in the manner in which disciplinary matters are handled


Additional Changes
Athletics Director will serve on the Chancellor’s Executive Committee and provide regular reports to campus Deans Council Change: Athletics Director will be more involved with campus leadership activities

Purpose: Enhances interaction with campus leadership
Vice Chancellor for Administration reviews and approves all sponsorships and revenue contracts Change: Athletics Director will no longer be solely responsible for contracts

Purpose: Helps facilitate consistent compliance with university and state regulations
Athletics Media Relations Director will report to Boulder’s Executive Director of University Communications Change: Athletics Media Relations Director will no longer report directly to Athletics Director

Purpose: Improves coordination of campus-wide communications
