Statement from University of Colorado President Betsy Hoffman regarding the call for congressional hearings

March 1, 2004

Last week I met with the entire Colorado Congressional Delegation, all of whom support the processes the university has in place. I personally appreciate the delegation's support for the university's processes as we work to find the facts.

We are determined to find the facts and have put in place an independent investigation to look at the need for recruiting and athletic department reform and a special assistant to examine the policies, practices and culture of the athletic department. And now we have a special prosecutor to investigate the criminal allegations.

Our priorities include finding the facts and creating a safe environment for all students -- on and off campus.

Once we have the facts, we are committed to fixing any problems that are determined to exist.

Congressman Mark Udall has also issued a statement on the situation. You can reach his press secretary, Lawrence Pacheco, at 202-225-2161.
