E-memo from CU President Elizabeth Hoffman and CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny to Boulder Campus Faculty and Staff Regarding the Report by the Independent Investigative Commission

May 19, 2004

Today the Board of Regents held a special meeting to discuss the report from the Independent Investigative Commission regarding issues surrounding the athletic department and football program.  After the regents heard from the commission, they voted to accept the commission’s report and then passed it on to us for action.

We know it has not been an easy journey the last several months.  We are learning lessons about ourselves and the university while we begin to pave a new road for the future of the university’s athletic department and football program.   As we map the course, we will be carefully reviewing the compilation of information from the Independent Investigative Commission, our internal investigations and audit, the Boulder Faculty Assembly, The Special Prosecutor, Dr. John DiBiaggio and other sources.

No matter what course we chart -- be it through personnel decisions, policy changes or organizational restructuring -- there will be criticism.  But we want to be crystal clear:  it is the well-being of the students and the future vitality of this great university on which we will base our decisions.

The university is comprised of many facets that all have an important role in the greater whole we call the University of Colorado.  Our goal is to ensure a vibrant, proud, dynamic and prestigious future for this university.  The students, faculty, staff and alumni deserve no less.

In the near future, we will announce our new course for the athletic department, the football program and the university.  We deeply appreciate the patience and support you have displayed throughout this difficult process.
