Summary Of Strategies For Improving The Campus Climate For Students Of Color

April 5, 2005

Initiatives Now In Place

  • Campuswide strategy sessions on recent racist incidents
    • African-American faculty and staff meetings with administration
    • Campus forum at Law School
    • Meetings with legislators
    • Discussion at Board of Regents meeting
    • Scheduled forum and on-campus meeting with legislators
    • On-going meetings with Shoulder2Shoulder student group
  • Response protocols for racist incidents in housing areas, including:
    • Timely notification of residents
    • Request for help in identifying perpetrators
    • Rewards offered
    • Support offered to victims
    • Timely investigations by campus police
    • Hall councils and faculty involved as appropriate
  • Communications strategies on racist incidents
    • Immediate news releases on serious incidents
    • Immediate statement by Chancellor condemning acts and articulating no tolerance
    • News releases on work of faculty/staff group
    • E-memos to campus from Chancellor
    • Posting releases and statements on news web site
  • Prevention initiatives underway, including:
    • Anti-racism poster campaigns
    • Anti-racism commission convened by the Residence Hall Association student organization
    • Development of new initiatives suggested by Shoulder2Shoulder group
    • Colorado Creed organized earlier this year, formally launched in April
    • Mandatory training in diversity and social justice issues for resident advisors and all residence hall staff
  • Oversight by Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs
    • CACMA charged to enhance the climate for diversity, multiculturalism and social justice
    • Assesses campus environment and advises the Chancellor
    • Will establish a sub-group to oversee current and new initiatives, evaluate success of strategies and recommend improvements
  • CUnity/Shoulder to Shoulder
    • Initiative co-sponsored with student-athletes, the Shoulder2Shoulder group, and Building Community Campaign
    • Promotes the support of all members of our campus community
    • Unifies community through slogan and logo on t-shirts and other apparel
  • Pilot program for "University 101" Course
    • Focus on college life skills issues, including behaviorial expectations for students, diversity and social justice issues, conflict resolution, and others
    • Has been piloted in Farrand Residential Academic Program as well as the Athletics Department
    • Will be implemented campuswide on a mandatory basis for new students over a three-year ramp-up period
  • Colorado Creed
    • Student-initiated campaign
    • Social behavior statement of standards for campus community
    • Values include personal responsibility, respect, civility and acceptance
    • In 2004-05, presentations made to student leaders, organizations and administration, community and alumni
    • Ongoing fund-raising, marketing and communication efforts
    • In April 2005, installation of the Creed plaque and flagstones in Norlin Quad
    • In summer 2005, introduction in orientation sessions for new students

  • Campus-wide Policy on Harassment and Discrimination
    • Articulates no tolerance for discrimination and harassment
    • Clearly defines and prohibits harassment
    • Establishes procedures related to violations
    • Addresses training, central reporting, investigations, fact finding and disciplinary actions
  • Harassment Response Card
    • Handy business card provides guidance on responses to harassment
    • Spells out campus policy and how to report incidents
  • Bystander Training
    • Training modules to help witnesses intercede appropriately
    • Empowers bystanders to take action
  • Orientation training sessions
    • Programming now being developed for enhanced diversity training in New Student Orientation
    • Summer 2005 orientation sessions will include diversity training for Arts and Sciences, Business, Environmental Design and pre-Journalism students
  • City of Boulder
    • Work with City Manager's Office, permanent presidents, and business leaders to address the climate in Boulder for people of color
    • Discuss common issues and opportunities and develop joint strategies
  • Student Portal
    • Utilize direct electronic communication tools to reach students
    • Promote messages about diversity and expectations of being a CU student.
    • When available, use new portal for newly admitted students for same messages

  • Faculty and staff training
    • Expanded training opportunities and requirements
    • Focus on understanding differences in campus community:  race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation and other dimensions of diversity
