Illustration
False color images of a condensate formed from pairs of fermion potassium atoms. Higher areas indicate a greater density of atoms.

Images from left to right correspond to the increasing strength of attraction between the atoms that form fermion pairs as the magnetic field strength is varied.

Figure1
Figure 1. This illustration of dancers in loose pairs mimics how two fermions not bound into one molecule can move together in a correlated fashion so that as a pair they can act like a boson and can then form a condensate. The fermions in this image have paired, like dancers at a prom, dancing to fast music. But the pairing is subtle. It is difficult to tell which dancers are paired, and you can only find them if you carefully look for eye contact and body language.

Figure2
Figure 2. In the second illustration, the fermions (dancers at the prom) have now bonded (when the slow dance began). Immediately after the slow dance starts, a flash photograph is taken with the snapshot showing bound "dancers," or molecules. It is easy to identify the pairs which are now bound in this picture. The pairing of the fermions was determined during the "fast dance" (first illustration) and only the bonding occurred during the slow dance (second illustration).
